just out of curiousity, is anybody else on hmt cruizin the forums on mozilla or konqueror web browser?

i decided some time ago that im sick of seeing "*insert windows program* has encountered an error and you are fucked, would you like to send an error report to microsoft?" i still use windows xp though about half the time for ---- that only runs well on windows machines.

Re:HMT Linux users?

lol... those are the names of web browsers, not os's.

and as far as xp, yeah, its cool. its alot better than any other windows os. however, it just drives me ------- insane when im in the middle of something and then all of a sudden xp decides to close down my program and i lose all of my data. this happens with internet exploder, any office xp program, windows media player...etc. ive tried starting over from scratch a few times(use a utility to write all 0's across the whole drive, then format ntfs and install windows). i have all the service packs/updates. i also have a good computer that i personally built 2.5 ghz p4 w/ 1024mb memory and all the nice bells and whistles. there is no good reason why my computing experience should be interuppted so much. granted, i do alot of ---- on my computer that alot of people dont do, but still.

that plus the fact that im also a (currently out of work) network tech. i have alot of experience with windows and novell, but linux is a weak point for me. i figure if i use linux at home i am bound to become familiar with it.

Re:HMT Linux users?

My bad. :-[ I don't know ----.

I haven't had too many of those error's, except when I'm doing stupid ---- that I shouldn't be or when I have to use "ctrl, Alt, delete". I guess I don't use my computer for more than just surfing the web so I wouldn't have a use for anything else. :-\

IE all you use is microsoft products.. i would HOPE they would work with the OS. I jsut dont liek the feel of windows peroid. remember its a personal preferance. SUSE uses most windows software that i would need anyway. (IE it can run office, etc etc etc)

i run win2k pro sp4 now.
i find it a lot more secure and stable than XP.

i don't think anyone could guess by my name that i'd have ever used linux before...

Re:HMT Linux users?

I ran xp home for a while and then decided to upgrade to xp pro because of the better networking capabilities for my domain.
So much ---- went wrong once I installed pro I pulled it off a week later. Stupid ---- wasn't working like plug and play, it wouldn't pick up certain drives etc.
I only upgraded to pro. If i did a clean install maybe it probably would have worked better.

Re:HMT Linux users?

Ya know, XP is stable when there isn't a lot of background crap. I'd say that most crashes in MS programs (Internet Explorer, Outlook/Express) are caused by BHOs (Browser Helper Objects). Particularly, the spyware ones. I've helped countless friends who say XP sucks, always crashes, etc. I take a look at a few things and see that they have tons of toolbars/spyware attached to IE. I clean it up and it runs like a champ.

For XP Pro and I think Win2k, you can use the command line utility, tasklist. There's a switch you can use (/m) that will list all the DLLs a particular program uses. For IE, there's a standard set of DLLs. When I start seeing oddball ones, like bi.dll or coolweb.dll, things like that..ugh!

For the programs that crash, you can hit details and find out WHERE and in WHAT DLL the crash occurred. Most of the time it's some 3rd party DLL.

There...had to get that off my chest.

Re:HMT Linux users?

cygwin rules btw.

most of linux ported to win32. so you can get used to it before you switch, or if you are an avid linux user and you find yourself at the c:\ trying to 'ls' or 'rm' something.

www.cygwin.com .

also, gcc is available for w32 as well.

Re:HMT Linux users?

i dont have any spyware on my system. i keep careful tabs on that ----. the only stuff i have running in the backround are norton antivirus, zonealarm firewall, and panicware's popupstopper(the old school one without spyware). whenever i see bullshit processes that should not be running i will end the process tree. remove it from msconfig, delete the files associated with it, and edit the registry to get rid of keys that should not be there. i dont have any toolbars or stupid ----, and the only browser plug ins i allow are ---- like flashplayer and other necessary stuff.

now i know what you are going to say, zonealarm and ESPECIALLY nortons AV will cause errors ALOT in other programs. however, i feel that i must have these programs running(in addition to being behind a hardware firewall). without them, its like having unprotected sex with a bitch on her rag that has aids and you have a cut on your dick.

ok, i will admit. out of the box with all of the service packs and updates, xp pro(---- home) is very stable. however, who doesn't install third party stuff? im not saying ---- made by some bullshit company, but what about software that is made by companies like symantec and other major software companies? it is NECESSARY to install 3rd party software like nortons, and modifying those dll files will surely make your system ---- itself.

w2k w/ service pack 4 is more stable and secure than xp, however it has less support than xp, which can sometimes be a pain in the ass. also, i have found that if you sneeze on your machine win98 will need a reboot...lol.

im not trying to make a case saying linux>windows>others or anything. linux is not bulletproof and has its own problems(haven't encountered any yet but im sure i will). im just trying something new because im sick of dealing with all the same old bullshit, plus i want to expand my capabilities as a network tech.

all os's have problems. most actually run great if you dont ---- with them. my old mcse instructor always used to tell people pebcak. that is, "problem exist between chair and keyboard." lol.
