HMT lesson of the day
Well guy's I've come to you today to share some info on why it's very important to grind BOTH pieces of metal before welding them together. Poor bigwig would have suffered a massive heart attack if this happened to him :-X
Anyway I removed my oil pan to weld in a nut on the inside for my drain fitting to thread into. I grinded the pan but stupid me forgot to grind the nut I was welding to the pan! I got the pan all bolted back up after a good 15 minutes of scrubbing all the metal shavings out. I got all the brackets back in place and all was set to go. I screwed in the oil drain fitting and heard "snap". My welds broke loose of the nut. Now I've got to drop the pan again and do things the right way :P See, it's the simple things we can overlook, that turn into bigger problems in the end ;) Almost done though guy's. I'm hoping to get this thing running this weekend, so I'll keep you updated. |

I weld all the time and depening on what it is and how hard it would be to grind I don't half of the time. The weld breaking is most likely from you not penetrating into the metal enough. Anyways that sucks, I always hate having to go back and make corrections. I always try to weld from "good metal to bad metal" weld to the cleaner thicker metal first and allow it to flow to the dirty or thinner metal. Your welds will usually come out much better that way and be stronger if you havent heard that one already. It also could have broken from your superman muscles, no reason to put 1000000 ft lbs of torque on that baby ;) |

You should have JB welded that ---- afterwards. :P My little 110 POS welder held Dannys(jb welder)drain fitting on, but we also JB welded it after because my welds were not very nice. :-[

Wash the shavings out of the pan with gas. Much easier IMO.

lol I've never had luck with jb weld before.
Then again I have not used it in years.... I'll give that stuff another go this summer when I need it. |

Well thanks for the advice and help guy's. The nut I welded in had like a Grade 8 coating on it. I don't know if it was zinc or whatever, but after I grinded it, it held perfect. No problems now but I SHOULD have JB welded it after too like Boost said. It leaks :-[ I'll get that baby sealed up today and try and fire the beast up.
