HMT Ladder Rack for an SUV

I just got a new job as a Telecommunications Tech, only problem is I need to lug arounda 28' foldable ladder. Any body have any plans or ideas on how to fab a ladder rack for an SUV? I don't feel like drilling thru my roof, so I was thinking about clamping down on the rain gutters. I was thinking about using aluminum square tubing to do all of it, but I've never welded aluminum. Worst comes to worst I will use steel, but I just don't want anything heavy on my roof. I am already paranoid about tipping over as is when driving my Cherokee. Thanks.

you should go to a sporting goods store and check out the roof-rack section, if you look at the ones for your vehicle that should show you where the best mounting points are (structurally)...I bet you could even get a Thule or Yakima rack to work, providing you wanted to spend the money on it.
