HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

Well most of us made it to the dragstrip, I had a little car trouble and spent most of the day on the side of the freeway. :(

I blew my head gasket maybe a week earlier so I had to change that the day before woodburn. I ordered/bought all the parts needed and the install went well, my car started up and ran fine ( I did it all myself! :D). Jeff (Abaz), Leia (rxsprincess), Travis (sidewinderx7), Steve (88dx) all came down to stay at my house the night before so they wouldn't have to get up early. Jason (fook) and Alec (CivicZC) also came up that night to hang out for a while. I had another buddy come over that night and we did a little trouble shooting trying to get his car to run right. We all ended up going to bed pretty late and were planning on leaving at 6:30 in the morning so we could get to woodburn early.

Just before I fell asleep I remembered I forgot to install my walbro 255, so I did a quick fuel pump install at 3AM. The pump had a piece broke off so I couldn't run the little filter on it. I asked a few people (Jeff was one of the people, I don't think he remembers though) and they said I shouldn't have a problem running it without a filter. As we leave in the morning my car starts up fine and I get about halfway there and my car dies. I was bogging down bad so I had to pull over, and then I couldn't even turn it over. I thought the fuel pump took a ----, but then why would my car also be dead? I spent most of the day on the side of the freeway, we changed my alternator and fuel pump, but still couldn't get it started so I just left my car there and went ot woodburn.

Anyways I didn't get to run my car, but after woodburn Jeff helped fix my car. We first checked for spark and got nothing, so after $177 for a ignitor and coil from NAPA we had spark, but no fuel. Well we finally figured out not having that filter on the fuel pump, it cant suck up the gas when it fuel gets low (I had about 1/4 tank) so I stuck the rest of my race gas in I had in the trunk and it fired right up and I made it home just fine, but bummed out since I couldn't run my car. So here we go with the pictures... Jeff will update with all the times and anything else since I was not there most of the day.

Head gasket install. Here is me the night before holding the goods. I figured I would just unbolt everything in one piece to make it easier on me.

Bottom is done, now it's time to put the top side back together.

Just finishing up tighting down the mani.

I ran out of anti freeze so I just decided to take a pee in my radiator.

Now it's the nexy day and I made it a little over halfway to woodburn.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w.../Woodburn7.jpg

We had a pretty good view the whole day (Steve rode down with me).

Changing an alternator on the side of the freeway. Thanks again Jason and Alec for helping me out. Jason on the left and Steve on the right.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn11.jpg

WTF!? I only have one bolt holding my alternator on? We can fix that with a screw driver and zip ties. ;D

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn12.jpg

We thought the alternator was the problem, but after switching nothing happened. I still decided to flip it off.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn13.jpg

I am in there switchging the fuel pump right now back to my stock one, still didn't fix anything.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn14.jpg

Me not in a good mood.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn15.jpg

This dude came by to check things out. I told him everything was going good and if we can't get it fixed my buddy has a trailer so we can tow it. He just said don't leave it here overnight because it will get broken into.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn16.jpg

I finally get to the track after leaving my car behind. I remebmer nobody got pictures of Stefan's (98ctr) car at BOTI so I made sure to snap a few. Your car looks sweet by the way, I like the welds. You also do the best burnouts I have ever seen!

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn18.jpg

Of course I had to get a shot of the HMT sticker.

Here is an intec racing car that ran 9.92 @ 146 mph I believe, Stefan you could proly give a little more info about this car.

Here is Stefan and the intec car lined up. Stefan ran his 11.6 on this run.

Leia in the staging lanes.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn23.jpg

Jeff tighting down the charge pipes. Leia had problems blowing charge pipes most of the day. I believe there was a hole in the hose and that was causing it to blow?

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn24.jpg

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn25.jpg

This time it blew a charge pipe so hard it knocked the bumper off!

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn26.jpg

Jeff tried a few runs in the bullet, but he couldn't even get the charge pipe to stay on during a burnout. HE left the bumper off and the charge pipe went flying across the track when it blew haha. The starter went up and asked Travis 2 times if Jeff was okay to run without that pipe lol.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn27.jpg

I didn't get to watch Beau run at all, but I chatted with him for a bit. I guess he had a little run in with another car and his new enclosed trailer.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/drag/w...Woodburn28.jpg

A picture of Beau's timeslip on his 10.6 run. Awesome time Beau! WTF is that a 1.2 60 foot I see?!?!? We all came to the conclusion that can't be right because that's like a world record for front wheel drive cars. It must be the Garrison Gerth. ;)

A final shot of the track.

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

Wow, what an eventfull day yesterday. Leia's car was running solid all day long at 15psi, and as soon as I turned it up to 17psi it was blowing charge pipes off. (yes even the tbolt ones) She was having problems getting use to the car, making 3 runs in the low 13's then finally hitting a 12.3, it was getting late and I wanted to make a run in the car, ---- both times I didnt even make it out of the water box and blew out the charge pipe. Lol, watching the charge pipe launch out of the car was pretty funny.

Beau's run was great, we were all excited he broke into the 10's. I remember asking him, lets see the slip, and seeing that 1.2 60 foot, I couldnt beleive it!! I was like that must be like some kind of new world record or something!! haha, I think it was a glitch, because if it was true beau would probably have the fastest FWD car in the world. I dont even think big guys like hoyos, and kubo get sub 1.3 60's.

What did beau change?? lol, the spark plug wires and the distributor cap, didnt touch the boost (24psi) Good job on the tune up buddy!

Pat and his bad luck really sucked yesterday, just glad we got everything figured out, sometimes it can be the simplist things. What really boggled me was that you had no spark when you were cranking the car over??.. I figured for sure it was either a coil or ignitor. But then after we replaced it we had great spark but no fuel?.. Fuel pump is turning on (power/ground) but nothing coming to the rail, and the car has 1/4 tank of gas, so I pulled it back out and I could see the bottom of the pump wasnt touching any gas. The filter has to be put on otherwise it wont draw the fuel to the inlet and suck it up. I dont remember telling you "oh you dont need that" I remember saying how in the hell did you break it putting it on? and on a 4g the pumps dont sit so goofy and it will suck the fuel up without the filter. You should of just put your old one on.

Anyhow, thanks to Pat for letting us Stay, Good job to Stephan for the 11.6 run. Beau setting a new world record, and travis/steve for all the help. Leia's car will make 1 more run this season, she will hit 11's in it, she just needs to get use to the power and shifting.

Jeff

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

Well technically you didn't say don't use the filter. You had told me I should upgrade my fuel pump and I told you I broke that plastic tip off so I couldn't put the filter on it. Ted was the one who told me just use it without the filter, you were standing next to us though when we were talkgin about it. I talked to a few other people and they seemed to think it would be okay since I have that fuel filter in the engine bay anyways. Lesson learned for me I guess. :-\

What I am wondering though is that if I would have left my stock pump with the filter in my car would I have still broke down? That no spark thing was completely different. Either way I am just glad I made it home and thanks for all the help.

Oh and thanks Ross (woodywoodruff) for driving all that way getting me the extra pump and tools. You saved me even more driving time. :-*

damn looks like you guys had a gang of a good time, well except for pat (sucks for the lucks man :(). Damn I'm surprised that you actaully left your car on the side of the road, I'd be paranoid as ---- and wouldn't know what to do.

Congrats to all and their good times, especially beau, 1.2... that's just... well... it's just.

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

That screwdriver in the alternator has to be my best trick yet. See me lounging on the back of the ZC, damn I was tired. I think I got to bed at like 3am and Pat called me at about 7:50am or something.

Look at Beau's slip, the dude next to him had like a 4.3 60 foot. How do you manage that? push it?

Anyways, it was a cool event, well what we saw of it. Hopefully I'll be there to run with ya at the next one, instead of spectating.

Jeff/Beau

What kind of couplers/clamps is beau using?

those are taking 24psi from a sc61 right or something like that on his race car...hook dem up on the h22

p.s.

if you already have the same ones, nm, just an idea

Are you talking about the TnT Sunday October 23rd at pacific raceways? I will try and make it to that. Hopefully we will both run well and problem free. :)

Did you happen to see the differnt chips I burned for Jeff to swap out for different timing? I labeled the 24* race gas chip 'Beau Timing' hahaha

using a combination of couplers on her car, some home depot ones that are away from the heat, and some napa ones directly in the engine bay. Both of them blew off, and both of them are using T-bolt clamps and have welds around the ends of the charge pipes so they dont come off. Beau is pretty much using the same thing, without t-bolts with euro style clamps, but he blew a pipe off as well. I may have to double up on some of the clamps. Neither of us use SC61's, beau has a 60-1 T4, and My turbo is a 62-1 BB T3/T4.

;D damn sounds like a blast.Wish i was not a parent i would have been there. Was doing the mr mom thing.Anyway i am gonna have the turbo truck at pacific raceways on the TNT day just to get the time slip for this year.Dont think im gonna beat beaus time though but ill be gunning for the low 12`s
May wanna try my trick with the screw jeff since the other turbo swap i have blown the other charge pipes but the one rubber hose slipped inside the rubber coupler with just a clamp an a screw under it has held up fine.

Sucks about the car trouble. Congrats on the new world record. Damn I wish I could get to the track. Haven't been to the races this whole season. ???

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

Why don't you guys just run straps on the couplings? weld 1 nut to each charge pipe and actually bolt the pipes together over the couplings. On my car I did this and I also cut a 2 inch piece of 2.5 inch pipe lengthwise and put it over the home-depot couplings. This was the rubber can't expand as easily. With doing all this I don't think you should have any problems anymore cause the charge pipes would be bolted together and the rubber couplings would be reinforced. Seriously, a nut and bolt is way stronger than any hose clamp.

Good idea there

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

or you can use the silicone couplers, I never had any problems with charge pipes. 98ctr

PS: theres a place in Kent that sells the silicone tubing for $15 per 15". I paid $80 for a long ass piece and I used half the josh used the other half.

do you have beads welded to the ends of the charge pipes?

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

Yeah he has that done if i recall correctly. Jeff have you ever thought of using the clamps for a exhaust system like the ones used for slip fit systems there about 9 dollars a piece but i dont think you would ever have another charge pipe blow again.

98ctr 10-05-2004 10:26 PM

Re:HMT goes to Woodburn Dragstrip! ::PICS:::

silicone conectors work awasome. they don't strech like the rubber ones. and the inside of then get attached to the pipes so good that is hard to take them appart when they don't have any clamps on them. 98ctr

All the charge pipes have beads on them, I'm just going to use some different coupler material and double up the clamps. It will be fine.

Oh, and that guy in the wheel chair, hahahah.. Man this guy with a built h22 all motor (exhaust side exit) was doing a burnoff and it about blew the guy over on his chair. LOL

up at a nearby shop, (Gearheadz) on the supra they race. they put a pin perpendicular to the pipe and then one on the other other pipe it connects to. then there is a rod that goes in between them and secures the charge pipes.

i dont know if you know what i mean, but i will have to get pics to really show you. they said this completely elimnates the charge pipes blowing off. and since you can weld... but then again, new couplers might also do it too with more clamps.

looks like everyone had fun.. cept bbka (who seems like he is having a bad luck streak with the racetrack issue).

i wish it was warm enough here to race... :-/
