High hp and stock sleeves, chime in.

I'm in a discussion with some people on another board about turbocharging.. and this girl says that the only 300 whp+ B series she's seen cracked their sleeves and thats why everyone should sleeve their engines no matter what..

These specific instances were sleeve failure (i.e. sleeve cracking, walk), not detonation. I've also seen around 400 horsepower on stock sleeves, but these instances are not by chance. These are finely tuned engines that most people cannot afford, and still, their stock sleeves are not going to last. Those cars are NOT daily drivers. For sure.
I'm trying to pull up examples of atleast a few 300+ whp HMT cars that are still on their stock sleeves and DD's but I can't really think of any (although I do know there are a few). Anyone out there that can help me out here with some links or whatnot, I'd appreciate it ;)

I could see needing sleeving for over 500whp on a B series, maybe 300whp for a D series :S. I wonder were she gets her info :-\ ?

lol show her the dyno of the d series on stock sleeves from full race or hotrexs dyno there are so many examples out there.

www.evans-tuning.com

450+whp on stock D-series sleeves...
http://forums.evans-tuning.com/viewtopic.php?t=3083

650+whp on stock B-series sleeves...
http://forums.evans-tuning.com/viewtopic.php?t=2598

So it can be done with conservative tuning.

Thanks bbka,

I used dave jeff and josh as examples already.

Re: High hp and stock sleeves, chime in.

it can be done, lots of them blow up though.

go the gas station, and get put premium in your car, but sometimes premium isnt almost 93octane... blow your motor... crack a sleeve etc...

lots of motors have take high hp (for a honda) with stock sleeves, but about a ---- ton of them have blown up and cracked sleeves at that same power level or lower.

sleeving them is a good idea if you want to make serious power, or else you will be holding your breath everytime you go WOT

Yeah those cars blew up or cracked sleeves because they weren't tuned properly.

::)

tell that to dave

whenever a honda motor blows up they say bad tuning, if we were jsut good tuners like in japan all hondas would be able to make 5000hp on stock blocks. its all in the tune

I think 98CTR was well into the 500 hp range on stock sleeves, and I am pretty sure he daily drives it every day

People like Jeff Evans and Mase have proved stock sleeves can handle high horsepower. Detonation and high cylinder pressure cracks skeeves, so if tuned well they won't crack. Just look at all the high horsepower honda that are out there these days. Oh and you mentioned pump gas, well people aren't running 500+whp daily and when they are running high boost it's on race gas. 300-400whp on a built motor should be fine on stock sleeves with pump gas.

mase is a douche and knows nothing about how engines work. anyone can edit cells on a laptop to tune a motor. it is not rocket science and it is not hard.

that being said, its hit or miss lots of them blow up, lots of them last a while

Come on now Johnny. ::)

Both of the tuners I mentioned know a hell of a lot more about tuning Hondas than you do. I have nothing but respect for Dave, but just look at the things Jeff Evans has done with Hondas. You can' say it's hit or miss because he has proved over and over it can be done, when done right on a properly built and tuned motor. I just find it hard to believe that Jeff (BH) and Full-Race Geoff just happened to have "freak" stock sleeved motors.

J-SMITH69 02-26-2006 06:05 PM

Re: High hp and stock sleeves, chime in.

mase is a total douche, ask him waht the definition of load is.

"mase" doesnt even know how the dyno he tunes cars on works.

he is one of the douche bags on HT who said "there is no such thing as load on an engine" and anyone who says that is a complete idiot

so as far as im concerned mase = idiot, and as previously stated, a monkey could be trained to tune a fuel injected gas motor

I just threw Mase in their because he has tuned quite a few high horsepower hondas on stock sleeves, but let's forget I mentioned his name at all. You can't say the same about Jeff Evans now can you... ;)

Jeff Evans (aka Boosted Hybrid) Go here man if you want to learn something about hondas... www.evans-tuning.com and check out the dyno graph sections to see all the stock sleeved cars he has tuned. He has a ---- ton of good articles on just about everything (building motors, tuning motors, engine geometry, etc...). He is also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, so I'm sure he knows how a motor works. :)

Although when it comes to a B Series, 400whp is nothing on stock sleeves. excluding: B20, anything less than 93, any detonation what-so-ever, 5th gear pulls

I've made 326bhp on stock sleeves b16, and I am shooting for 450-500whp on stock sleeve ls/vtec, and my spare block is the b16 will be shooting for at least 400 on that, dont know how long its gonna last, but I wont quit untill I make it

Maybe, but I doubt it. I don't know him personally, but I can't see somebody like him that spends all his time working on and tuning hondas putting out information that isn't true or that he hasn't tested himself. He's believes in stock sleeves enough that he runs huge power on his own motor, so that's good enough for me. :)
