Hey I'm new too!

Hey

I'm new around here, been lurking around for a while, and seeing the influx of new members, I thought it would be best if I made myself known.

I'm a young guy still, I don't even own a car worth going HMT style on, so you know it's pretty bad...

I'm just saving up right now, but when I do finally get some cash together, I need to figure out what kind of car to get, before I can even think about turboing it.

I'm a big fan of Honda's, cheap, plentiful, fuel mangement is easy. But at the same time, I love V8's. Just as cheap, just as plentiful, and carb's don't seem overly difficult to turbocharge from what I've learned so far.

I guess I'm really looking for some guidance and opinions, as a first car, with a lot of long distance travelling in mind. I know a Honda, or any 4 banger would be more practical, but I can't escape the lure of domestic muscle.

Interested in hearing what you folks have to say.

civicvtecb16a: Minor Threat song, plus even though I'm copying it, I kinda figured it's better than my car, and the motor in my car as my username. ::)

SinisterCRX: 1990 Nissan Sentra. SOHC, 1.6L, and one fuel injector. Go me...I'm not gonna turbo it because the car is going to rust out in about a year I'd say.

I would go with a Honda. You will save on gas (High Prices)and much more practical for long commutes.

Re:Hey I'm new too!

Brett,

Welcome to HMT. I feel your pain with the strife between v8 and i4. It will be cheaper in the long run if you just get a honda now, damn rising cost of fuel. Consider resale value as well, unless you really know how to restore a classic v8, you're not going to get the high dollar for it. Turbocharge a honda and find some dumb kid to buy it off you. Or paint your car banana boat yellow and the haitians in ft. lauderdale will pay any amount you ask for it.

As far as what to work on, I find both cars equally challenging. The design of the v8s are easier, but hondas have obd0-1. It just seems that the bolts are easier to get off of a honda block, but the space you have to work with is limiting. Your call man.

As far as inexpensive vehicles to get, go for:
88-91 Honda Civic/CRX/Hatch
90-93 Honda Accord
90-93 Acura Integra
79-93 Mustang Notchback (5.0)
Chevy Monte Carlo/Malibu/Camero/C-Series Truck. Go for a sbc 350/327/400.

Let me know before you buy, I can tell you what's up with the motor with just the casting number on it. Goodluck.

Bondo that bitch and turbo what ya got. IMO the next gen sentras looked better, but ---- it.

Ya know I was taking my time typing out the first post (doing other ----) and all of a sudden this has 8 posts on it.

Wow, no offense civicvtecb16a, but you're a pretty big douche bag. If you took the time to read my entire post, and understand what I said, then something like "Ok, so he's planning on turboing the car he gets, and he wants to know what he should look for.." should be running through your head. And um, I know it's HMT, so with your reasoning, why is a fuckhead like you with b16a in your riced out civic, hanging around?

Scottsi: Why don't you like me? Because I drive a Nissan or because I like domestics too? I plan on donating, no worries.

TMonarky: My thinking too, I'm just wondering if there are some people who own both that can give me all the sides of the story.

---- yeah, I never expected to get responses so fast, some people live on HMT it would seem.

I like the G-bodies actually, but as you said, gas and resale come into effect. I was actually hoping you'd get a word in on this one, you know your ----. I will definately run stuff by you when I get to making a purchase. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Well, the thing that worries me about turboing what I've got is the single fuel injector. I think I'd have to stick an RX-7 secondary in there to get the fuel I'd need, because yeah, a 4dr shitbox turbo would be nice.

I don't get it, you like Euro Spec motors, but not the lights?

Yeah, I know I'm not turbo'd, don't hold it against me, I'm workin on it...

Thank you, thank you. 'Bout time I get the respect from the noobs that I deserve. This one is most likely going to stick around, so I don't mind writing the 2 page responses.

Forget the overpriced J spec motors. Don't go out of your way to make a bad ass ricer. Just do what you like. I prefer stock looking cars, and sleepers! Like my volvo.

Minor Threat 05-16-2004 02:59 PM

Re:Hey I'm new too!

I am a poor teenager, I don't even like J-spec stuff. I'm not looking to swap anything at all.

I like fast, clean cars.

Speaking of volvos, Have you visited www.turbobricks.com?

civicvtecb16a: No, I just didn't like you shitting on me for no reason. I doubt you're really a douche bag. Sorry.

Yes, it's a good resource base for us 240 guys. I'm actually one of the rare kind of people who knows everything about the 240 series. Have had 8 between me my dad and my brother.

Going to swap in a v8 (and most likely turbo it) one day into my favorite 240. Need to get back to it.

Minor Threat 05-16-2004 03:05 PM

Re:Hey I'm new too!

That is a lot of Volvos...

V8's in 240's are scary. ;D

So should I just look into getting a turbo volvo wagon? It doesn't get much sleepier than that... ;)

i never said id idnt like you, that was a joke, but yeah, donate. Just dont post up real stupid questions like, "how much hp will this turbo make on blah blah blah" or bullshit like that.

In response to your welder question you sent to me, read my posts on buying a welder, I have two of them with all the info you will need. What is your budget?

Minor Threat 05-17-2004 04:45 PM

Re:Hey I'm new too!

I read it, even did some research myself, but I'm just clueless when it comes to finding out what I need to weld. I don't care how pretty the welds are, as long as they'll hold. I'm just looking for the cheapest thing possible, as my budget is $300 or less.

Re:Hey I'm new too!

Well ----, if you're going for bottom dollar budget, pick up a used 110v arc welder on ebay, get some rods from the hardware store and go to work. You can pick up a basic style welding helmet for around $15 (egay or local), heavy gloves and you are in business for as little as $50.

Then just grind down the ugly puddles that you will make with the ARC welder. It is a little bit trickier to do exhaust pipes with that setup (can be done) but it will hold. Get some scrap metal and start practicing, I have arc welded many things, usually agricultural or industrial level ----, strongest possible welds.

Minor Threat 05-17-2004 08:12 PM

Re:Hey I'm new too!

Ah, I knew somewhere there was a setup for me. Would a 110V ARC welder be powerful enough to weld up a manifold or something similar? I know the welds will be ugly as hell, but I've got access to grinding equipment, plus I don't really care if they look like ass, as long as they hold. Thanks for all the help, and the welcome Abaz. :)

Re:Hey I'm new too!

Oh yeah, the arc welder will hold up better then a MIG welder in the same class.

The hardest part will be not burning thru the thing exhaust pipes. This will take some practice, the MIG has the nice advantage of having a shielding gas that cools the area and prevents warping.

If you are to dive in and do some cast iron, it requires the metal to be brought up to a certain heat, then let back down in stages for the perfect hold. There is a great science behind welding that most people don't realize, like creating the cleanest metal surface before welding. I like to sandblast ---- before I take it to the sparks.
