Help making a new website

So I'm thinking about starting a small buisness endeavor, I want to make a relatively simple website, and I'm sure some of you guys could help me out. I'm talking about a really simple HTML website. now I've done a couple of these for a class before, but they were hosted on my webspave for my school. To do this I had to use a secure shell something or other to access a unix server, and write code in an emacs editor. And it was a royal pain in the ass. So I'm wondering about making a real website.

So If I pay for webspace, site name and all that, how do I go about uploading my HTML files? because I can't handle all the bs that I had to do to upload the stuff for my school, It was way too time consuming.

Also, how much can I expect to spend on all this, assuming the website name I want isn't registered. the site isn't registered if I get the generic we can't find the page you are looking for error message.

Thanks in advance, I'm sure there are some people here that could do this stuff with their eyes closed.

you just select the files in an FTP or webpage gui and upload them. its not hard at all.

yea the domain name will cost you $10 a year, give or take a couple bucks, and the webspace itsellf can run anywhere between $5 and $200 a month, depending on how much storage and bandwidth you need. when you start out, chances are you'll only need the 5-10/mo server
