Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Sooooo HIDs are sweet, but the Bi-Xenon are a little too much for the ricer effect you get from them. So I was curious if any of you went out and bought some aftermarket bulbs and was wondering how that worked out for you. No way do I wanna pay $15 at AutoZone for blue tinted bulbs I can't see crap with, then again $60 on some that don't do anything is just as dumb.
Yes, it's kind of a H-T question, but who has tried what as far as the bulb category goes? JP |
Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
I've tried the original Silverstars, but not the new versions. Sure they put out bright white light, but I don't see how the pricetag is justified, especially when they last 1/3 as long as a cheapo yellow bulb.

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
years ago i used the cheap blue tinted bulbs, about 2 years ago i used the silverstar bulbs, and i hated them all.
each of those sucked for vision while it was raining. I have went back to UNtinted regular bulbs from autozone and my night driving has never been better. though my car may not look "cool" without the blue tinted bulbs, at least i can ------- see the road. |
Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
I just put some of the Silverstars in our 01 civic yesterday and they are a whole lot brighter than the oem bulbs. Wife works 3rds and has already thumped one dear this winter. On the low beams you can see about twice as far maybe a little more. They run about $30 for the set, but I have read they don't last as long as regular bulbs.

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
which ever bulb u might get, NEVER get the blue tinted ones.
|
Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Silverstars have a light blue tint for clarity, much like contact lenses. It's not enough to make the light blue or change the color of your eyes, but it definitely filters the light well.

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Only bulbs you can get that emits a white light without a tinted glass are the osram bulbs. You can get them on ebay.
The silverstars are lightly tinted blue, but the light is white and they look white when looking at them. |
Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
yeah i just bought a set of silverstar blue tinted ones for my car. the 40 dollar set. they make a huge improvement. i can see at night. i love them. even though i was broke even before i bought them, thanks to christmas, i dont regret it. and the light is white, not blue.

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Well Donald's in Cali and blue lights are illegal there just like here in VA. My car failed inspection right after I bought it because the monkey before me put blue lights in it.

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Like everyone else I have run the Silverstars. They are an improvement, but they cost hella money. I got mine for free, so they were well worth it.

IMO HIDs are good only if you have projectors so the beams can focus. installing HID in a housing designed for regular bulbs AKA stock headlighs will cause all kind of reflections AKA blinging the incoming traffic :7 |

Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
My is300 (non projector) has a sort of headlight leveling device that keeps the HID beam at an optimal level. It is too bad that more cars don't have somthing like ths as a poorly aimed headlight, even the yellow halogen, is a pain in the ass to deal with regarding oncomming traffic.
---- silverstars, for a little more money you can get Cheap HIDs that are way more effective. IMO 4300k is about right, the light is more white than the purple tint that is prefered by the ricer community. |
Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
Try Brasso on those old nasty headlights.

Yellow bulbs in anything but fog lights gets your ass pounded by the po-po here in VA. Dunno about where you are though.

I actually have a little dial that I can spin to raise or lower the beam level to keep from whacking people in oncoming traffic. Re: Headlight Bulbs.....a ricerish question...
the reason why hids get a bad wrap is because many people either don't aim them right or use a housing that is not designed for the bulb thereby producing excessive glare. 4300 to 6000k is about right for light output....anything more is ricerish and actually degrades the amount of light.
