Re: have you ever seen organisms move across your eye?

The entoptic phenomenon (or Scheerer's phenomenon and sometimes referred to as the entopic phenomenon which is a common spelling mistake) is when one can actually visualise blood flow through the retinal blood vessels. We all have the potential to see the blood flow but most of us are able to ignore this. Some people may become suddenly aware of this and this sudden awareness may lead to the idea that there is a problem with the eyes, when actually there is not. This moving dots effect are actually leukocytes, or white blood cells (WBC), which move along through the blood-filled capillaries.

There are many capillaries on the retina which have the shape of a snake, a sine-wave, and when a leukocyte travels through that channel, it executes a sinusoidal "wiggle" motion. The capillaries are said to be normally invisible because they are full of hemocytes (red blood cells), and these hemocytes are too close to each other, and too far away from the retina to create individual moving shadows. Therefore, like the capillaries themselves, our retinas "edit" the blood cells out the view perceived by our brains. On the other hand, the leukocytes (White blood cells) are large, and they act like gaps in the columns of blood which fill the capillaries. These "moving holes" in the blood are made visible whenever we stare at a uniformly illuminated surface.

The entoptic phenomenon can be seen especially observed when looking at a bright blue sky. Small, rapid pin-point sparks of light can be seen darting about in the central vision. Some people may think that these sparks are floaters. In reality, they represent white blood cells moving through the blood capillaries of the retina. This is a normal finding, and actually may indicate normal retinal function.

Cool, I know what youe talking about. always thought they were dust or dirt and ---- instead of organisms, but yeah.

Buk find out what's up with the kaleidiscopic visuals when you're tripping. i've always figured it was just your brain being too overwhelmed with other ---- to worry about correcting what you're seeing (like it does with the capilary shadows and look up prism glasses experiments) but dunno what the true reason is. They look badass though.

Re: have you ever seen organisms move across your eye?

No, they're the blood vessel deals, not "floaters". These don't move when I blink my eyes. I've already seen a couple since this post.

I read the title quickly... organism looks like orgasm when you're not paying attention... then I thought buk was getting a little out of control.

wooo!! Glad I saw this thread. I thought my eyes had problems too. In the morning when I'm brushing my teeth, I stare down at the white sink, and I'll see a little black dot fly around infront of me. and moved with my eyes.

Yeah, it happens to me when ever it's sunny and I'm outside. I just look at the sky and I can see micros traveling with the direction I'm looking. I live in southern Arizona where it's always sunny so that ---- occurs when ever I go out side without shades. So basically, you are not crazy. (Well you are still an A-rab terror specialist, but I don't think you are suffering Schizophrenia.)

I figured it happened to me because I sleep with my contacts in too much and I had organisms groing on my lens. Learn something new everyday.

You can actually see them really good if your inside and suddenly go outside and stare up at the sky (not the sun) the sky has to bee clear.

I still have that issue. The moving strands are nothing more than "eye protien". Found that out when I went to see an eye doctor to get a new pair of glasses. That translates to your eye's are healthy.

She could be lying, but "that what she says", get it.........hahahah

I can see them too. I know exactly what your talking about. I see them best when looking at an LED on my computer in the dark with my glasses off. (I have horrible vision. like -5.25)

ive seen them too. mostly whn i look at something uniform in color, like a blue sky, as the article buk posted said. it seems plausible that the wbc thery is true, but this is the first time ive heard about it

Re: have you ever seen organisms move across your eye?

They look like sparklies to me. I have a floater in my left eye and it drives me nuts sometimes when I'm driving. I think I will see something out of the corner of my eye and nope..its that damn floater. Had the eye doc look at it and he said it might have been caused by trama. Which I have done some fun ---- in my day haha. Hockey, 4 wheeling, boxing, crazy puerto rican ex gf...yep that could do it.

Heres another neat trick to try:

Take your pointer fingers (index fingers for you correct types) and put some small pressure on the sides of your eyes. Right where you feel your eye socket bone. (corners of where your eyelids meet) Keep your eyes open when doing this. Don't look around just look in one spot. You will start to see the sparkles and eventually all vision will fade away. Don't know when or who taught me this but its wierd! Its harmless just try it.
