I'm trying to figure out if this has the sleeves that have been known to fail.

Turns out most of the motors in these cars were recalled because of some coating they used in the sleeves that would deteriorate when exposed to high sulfer content gas like we use here in the US. If the motor in this car has that coating, than it's not worth dick. If it doesn't have that coating then I'll pick it up.

A carfax report should tell me which sleeves it has...

Would an overbore help the sleeve issue? BMW blocks are pretty bulletproof, would make a good turbo 5.

Re: Hate to do this but... can someone run a carfax for me??

Nope it's a silicone alloy or some ---- that they used in making the sleeves. From what I've read the only way to fix it is get a new shortblock that has different sleeves. Which is why these cars are not worth much if they have the shitty sleeves.

It is a v8 though, I'm thinking twins? Or a big single at least, if I can fit it in there.

If a carfax dosent show anything u could try a BMW dealer and see if they will run the VIN and see the warranty record

Re: Hate to do this but... can someone run a carfax for me??

I did that like preliminary free vin thing through carfax, and it showed that there are 18 records for this thing :o

Haha. So yeah, if no one has an account I am going to just buy one. I just figured I'd ask and see if someone had one already. If there are 18 records in the history, sounds like I should know what they are.

Doens't 18 sound excessive?

the nicasil sleeves sucked in thoses cars. I thought that the motors fail after only a few miles. If it has reasonbly high mileage it should of been replaced.

my carfax just ran out...if u have aaa, u can sign up for carfax through their website for like 21 for unlimited....it works out to be around 5 bux cheaper to do it that way

Re: Hate to do this but... can someone run a carfax for me??

I just had the seller check the numbers on the engine block and it looks like the block hasn't been replaced and is a nicasil block. :-X

So yeah. Guess I'm not buying that one!

Back to the drawing board. I'm kind of thinking that a 325i like E30 chassis would be even better, and probably easier to turbo as well.

Bah, screw a beemer... The blocks might be bulletproof but all that extra electronic ---- is just bound to fail. They look clean, and if I had disposable income I could pick some that I like. Don't plan on buying one, ever, though.

just thought i would throw this out there....i wrecked the ---- outa my old hatch a bunch of times and later on i looked it up on car fax and it said that it has never been wrecked...so i quit trusting it...dont you have to turn ---- it in order for it to be on car fax....

Re: Hate to do this but... can someone run a carfax for me??

The Nikasil problem

BMW used Nikasil, an aluminium, nickel, and silicon alloy, to line the cylinders of the M60 engines. The cross-hatched Nikasil linings react with the high sulfur content found in lower-quality gasoline, such as that used in parts of the United States. This reaction causes damage to the very top of the cylinder bore, where there is the most contact of the burning mixture and the cylinder lining. The damage prevents a good seal from forming between the piston and the cylinder wall, causing a loss of compression in the combustion chamber. This "leak down" will cause M60s with worn linings to exhibit a rough idle, and if the problem continues unchecked, the engine will not start.

The only permanent fix for this problem is the replacement of the short block with the equivalent block using Alusil linings, which do not exhibit this corrosion problem. After the problem was found, BMW issued an extended six-year, 100,000-mile (160,000 km) warranty to cover these engines at no cost to the owner.

The composition of the engine can be found by checking the serial number stamped into the engine block:

M60B30:

* 1 725 970 - Nikasil
* 1 741 212 - Nikasil
* 1 745 871 - Alusil

M60B40:

* 1 725 963 - Nikasil
* 1 742 998 - Nikasil
* 1 745 872 - Alusil

So if you run good gas you won't have this problem? :l
