Default ?'s on a lost titles

I'm curious on how many people have dealt with obtaining lost titles? Reason being is that there's a bike I'm interested in but the guy doesn't have the title. Nothing fishy just he got the bike from his uncle who was the original owner but the uncle lost the title awhile ago. He says if noone buys the bike then he'll just go through with trying to get a title and give it to his wife to ride. He just doesn't have the motivation too much as he already has two bike and this one just sits. He'd would get his uncle to write up a letter of sale and everything since he was the only person who it would last shown being registered to. He say it might be a problem being it's been awhile since it's actually been registered and it's an older bike(74). I know state to state it'll be a little different but just trying to get an idea if it's worth the hassle. The bike isn't anything fancy or spectacular but just something I like.
The bike is a 74 Honda CB750. Had the carbs rebuilt a year ago and the bike runs like a charm. Needs new tires and a new seat. $750 firm. No rust and electrical is all working. Blue book on these start out at 1400 and perfect condition 74 cb750 goes for 7g's. Parts are really easy to come and fairly cheap. I just want a Honda CB of some sort be it a 350/360/400/450... twin..4 banger I don't care.

I've had some title trouble myself, and i'm 96% sure that the owner whose name is on the title must reapply for the lost title, no one else can. Otherwise, if you saw a sweet car in the parking lot and wrote down its vin#, you could just apply for his title and proceed to steal and then legally own the car :1

im not completely sure but in some states after 10 years they dont really need the title, you could go with a bill of sale. id go ask the dmv or something.

I'm saying the the original owner would write up a bill of sale with the bike. I'm not just getting the bike and trying to get the title with nothing to say that I purchased it from the original owner. The nephew I bought it from said it might be a problem and more of a hassle due to the age and it's been awhile since it last registered.

No info on the title but those are sweet bikes. I rode an '81 CB650 for a while and i loved it. I like the Suzuki based cafe racers a bit more but this would work pretty well too.

I don't lose things like those nor would I ask, I'd just grab some if they seemed lost.

if you know someone at a tow facility, you might be able to get them to say it was abandoned and apply for a title for you.

realisticly, you need to do a lien search on the vin#, then you get the address of the original owner. you have to send them 2 certified letters letting them know you have it, and if there is no reply, you can apply for a title.

I could be wrong, but I think that's how it works in VA
