Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters

Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
500w spindle, pissy ----. that's rotozip power. and since HF motors are always marked up 3x what they output that'd be about like a dremel.
$3000 you can buy better home machines than that. atleast step up to a romaxx running a big boy router/spindel |
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Hey dude, let me pick your brain for a second. I race mountain bikes but more and more I'm getting into the prototyping area of it. nothing to fancy right now. Mainly new shock mounts, new swing arms and shock linkages. This is about as advanced of a piece I would ever have to make.http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co...%2008(250).jpg
I would probably use a lot more straight lines to make it easier. I was thinking about something like this. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/pho...4299/94276.gif http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94276 I have a pretty nice drill press, would that work? I'll mainly be milling t-6061 with a little 4130 thrown in here and there ( never more than .125" think). Also the other thing is I'm on a budget since I'm grassroots right now. Thanks bros for the advice. |
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Used equipment is selling for hella cheap these days. Many shops are downsizing and well deals are out there.
|
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Yeah, I've been looking for a good cross slide. like the Enco
http://www.use-enco.com/ProductImages/0069514-11.jpg it's $145. I think I may go with that. |
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
what kind of drill press.
you must understand the biggest reason you dont mill with routers and drill presses is that the bearings can not tolerate side-load. it takes no time to wear the run-out to unacceptable levels for woodworking, let alone fine metalworking. |
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Its and older craftsman floor mount with a JT-2 chuck on it. I might head over to my shop a little later and I could get the exact model.
|
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
drilling & grinding, fine. milling gunna ruin it.
|
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Yeah I think I'll just stop being a cheapskate and buy a three in one. Got any recommendations on a good brand I can but used? probably wouldn't need to have a large range than 8" in one direction.
|
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Look around. An old used mill will be 10x more machine than the HF ----. Juts look around there's stuff out there. Go to old machine shops and ask them if they have anything, or know anybody, etc. I got a 18x60 gear head Clausing lathe with a 3 and 4 jaw chuck, steady rest, follower rest, and a few other bits for FREE. Old school was getting rid of some old equipment for new CNC ---- and I got it. Plus it's like new cause they never used the damn thing. Gear head and cuts standard and metric threads too. :6

Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
Yeah that's actually what's happened with my drill press and bandsaw. I got both for $70. I went to woodcraft to get some stuff for them and the guy helping me offered me $500 for both right there. But yeah I'll check around cause there's probably a lot of people with junk lying around. Thanks for all the help on this guys.

and im a precision machinist. i'd buy a brand new Thai made vertical mill, with a proper milling table. they are available for very good prices these days and are certainly better than using a chinese shitheap, or a slopped out old machine. dont ---- around with mill/drill combos or drill conversions, they are not rigid enough in the chassis, and as has already been said, the spindles dont like the side loads. you can buy cutters and drills for cheap on the net as well, and i know you have the skills and tools to fab your own tooling if need be. measuring gear will also be useful..... hit me up if need more info, Dan :) |
Re: Harbor Freight your CDM Headquarters
I have been happy with my NITROUS boost guage.
Gonna buy the oil temp guage sometime soon, I opened the box and EVERYTHING was included. |
