Gutting Your Cat!!!

Ok... well my vehicle just passed the ever so dreadfull California Smog Check.... barely... (because of ported head)
Anyways... as soon as it passed... i went home and decided to gut the Catalyc Converter.... damn.. it wasnt as easy as i though it would be... i poked, pounded, beat, and drilled the ---- out of it... till everything came out... now... theres nothing left.... my question to you people is.. was it worth the trouble??? less restriction... or was that restriction needed to create a bit of backpressure.... and when the turbo is slapped on there next week would it have been neccessary then to gut it..?????

Anyone care to point me in the right direction...

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

gutting the cat will free up some HP when your car is turbo, probly wont do ---- for a NA car.
is it worth it? cost of gutting = $0, free HP = ;D

Yes my son it was worth every last second now you will be rewarded with free hp and a turbo steup next week.. Now you must jump over the crouching tirger and find the hidden dragon.......

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

you lucky bastards.... no smog check.... so that means you can pretty much ---- with your car and do anything you want to it.... It almost didnt pass... because I ported head.... and it was pumping out a little to much (HC) but now i can go all out.... and be worry free for the next 2 years.... or pay 150 to have it passed illegaly

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

they make very slight differnces on na cars, they will make it feel alot more (raspier). On FI cars it makes big differnces in spool times.

uhm
why not buy a test pipe for 30$ and have the cat to put back on for next years smog.

now your gonna pay more in the long run. :-\

Got to love Florida, I have also a straight pipe from headers down to my exhaust. Every once in a while I get Pulled over for being too loud, but they can't do ---- because of that down here, or at least they haven't.

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

Yeah I did notice the car sounds raspier when i accelerate.. but i noticed that the engine doesnt seem like its gagging when i decelerate... so i did notice an improvement... I wish i would have just had a bypass pipe made...to have kept the cat workable... but im pretty damn sure that the next time i have to smog the car it probably wont pass... so ill just get it done illegally... ---- i hate living in Cali...

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

I think you will be just fine doing your smog test. I have passed several times at smog test with no cats. Actually I did a test once, and My car ran cleaner after I removed the cat. Probably because the 185k stock cat was a bit plugged. You would be suprised how clean hondas run.

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

Factory Honda cats are already some of the highest flowing cats from an oem manufacture. Gutting it could not only get you introuble With the smog patrol but can also create alot of turbulance and increase backpressure since the ehaust gasses will now go into a bigger chamber and then out a small one again. This could actually hurt power. If you want to get around your cat have a straight piece of pipe made to fit in place of your cat and keep it around when it is time to get your car tested again. It is a common misconception that gutting your cat frees up all sorts of horsepower. I made a custom cat replacement pipe for my car out of a piece of exhaust pipe equal inlength to my cat and welded on the proper flanges that I got from a cat in a junkyard.

Re:Gutting Your Cat!!!

well here in the state of california... Junk yards are not allowed to sell used cats.... but it is a good idea of using the flanges the cat already has.... well the reason i did this to it.. was that there was a big ass dent in it anyways.... (I hit a rock when i was driving it on a muddy road) ... but at least i now have flanges... and ill get an aftermarket Cat later on when i need it... but thanks for the info...

No emissions here in SC either. The only restriction I have on my exhaust is one 13" resonator.

Re: Gutting Your Cat!!!

yeah, personally would have used a straight pipe, but I am sure you're good. as long as you dig it. here in jersey, everyone wants to gut their cats for free HP.

Re: Gutting Your Cat!!!

I really don't understand why people do this.

It's really, really stupid.

If your OEM cat is in good condition you can sell it for at least 35-50 dollars. Then make a test pipe that is a decent size!

Even if your cat is gutted it still has POS 1.75'' outlets! Hmm....2.5'' downpipe to 1.75'' inlet going into a fucked up gutted chamber thing, to the 1.75'' outlet ...to probably a 2.5'' or 3'' exhaust?

Seems really fucked up and stupid if you ask me. Not to mention gutted cats sound like ----, sometimes rattle, and sometimes smell.

I don't really like the sound of a test pipe either, I prefer replacing the cat with a resonator or just a carsound high flow.

yeah, I noticed on ALL my setup's that punching the cat on a NA car even makes a nice difference. On a turbo car just open 3inch downpipe will PROBABLY make the best performance too.

Re: Gutting Your Cat!!!

Man you should have just gotten a straight pipe! its definitly cheaper in the long run...
But then again my car is registered in wisconsin.. NO SMOG, NO INSPECTIONS. (Although I live in Maryland)
