Yo, My buddy got a Guitar for Xmas, and I've been messing around with it learning a few ez songs and stuff. So the other day I went ahead and got my own.

Any of you guys play guitar, and know some good beginner songs I can start working on?

Re: Guitar

time of your life (good ridenece) by green day is a perfect beginner song. it uses all your basic and common chords and easy flow. also try some punk. Pennywise bro hym tribute, pretty easy, good for learning rythm and strumming

Flight of the bumblebee is a good place to start. :y

How much you pay for yours? I keep thinking about buying an acoustic, but I never do. I sold all my old gear to turbo my car. :8

Re: Guitar

I've got an two acoustics and one electric. Just find songs you like and search for the tabs, you can fin the mfor almost any song. green day songs are easy, blink 182. you can also find simple chord progressions for a lot of old classic rock songs like zepplin. but you won't stick to it playing ---- you don't like so just start looking for songs you know and find ones that look easy. And guitar kicks ass and gets ass so stick with it.

Re: Guitar

Brain Stew by Green Day is a good one to start out with. Remember, it takes time to learn, you're not going to turn into Hendrix overnight.

Re: Guitar

if you ever go electric, DONT GET THIN strings. I had a jackson soloist and bought really really thin strings cuz i wanted to do metal solos, and those fuckers cut the ---- outta my fingers...

Re: Guitar

if u want to learn real music play some jimi. great stuff. in his songs you can go from easy cordal ---- to complex tweaked out solos. great learning music. any of the clasic rock songs really. at one time they were all about the same.and only dip into the punk/grunge for practice perposes like someone said abouit your strummin and rythem but fro the most part its not real music. and get a metronome

a metronome is a ticking little thing that keeps you in rythem and keeps the beat. you can set it to tick on 1/4 notes, 1/2 notes, whole notes, 1/8 notes, well you get it. also you can get a really cool one that is electric and has a tuner built in :)

Re: Guitar

my first song was Green Day's "Basket Case" really really easy. but other than that all of my suggestions were already suggested. def. Blink 182's "damnit" and "josie"

Re: Guitar

Re: Guitar

Whitey Ford Sings the Blues by Everlast is a pretty fun song to learn. I picked up my electric again after layin it down for about 2 years...workin on Pantera's Cemetery Gates right now...fun song to play once you learn how to do the pitch harmonics. Or for you power chord freaks, My Own Summer (shove it) by Deftones is a blast to play too.

Punk music is harder to play than most. You ever played that fast for 30 minutes. I have and its hardly easy. Punk music is simple but the speed/pace is what fucks most people up. Oh bass player. Simple practice makes perfect. I also like to listen to music before I play.

Re: Guitar

Can't think of any songs off the top of my head.

I have 1 Washburn Accoustic, 1 Yamaha Classical, 1 Yamaha 5 String Bass, and 1 4string Acoustic Bass, a Short Scale 4 string bass which is in peices right now. I've had about 7-8 Guitar over time, the above are the only one I've kept.

Re: Guitar

a REALLY good resource for you if you're just into reading tabs (blech) is power tabs. its a really simple program where it has the tab listed below the actual notes, so if you don't know the song and know about note values then you can learn it easy.... also, it will play a sweet midi file of the song too

go here to get the program: http://www.power-tab.net/

and check back at www.powertabs.net

I haven't used it in SO long, I guess its down right now... however, I have tons of the files on my computer still

Dream Theater
Tool
Rush
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Opeth
Rammstein
Queen
Dio

.... lots of things

many of the files I have have BASS as well as guitar, and even drums so if anybody is in need....

Re: Guitar

I think the first song I learned to play was nirvana's nevermind...wow is that ever depressing. Play stuff you enjoy but don't just learn punk songs, there fun but they don't get you anywhere.

Cray91 02-09-2006 12:01 AM

Re: Guitar

First song I learned to play was "nothing else matters" by Metallica

I would suggest that you learn full songs rather than just intros. Sure it takes a bit of memory but it will make you more than just some hack with a guitar.

Try to learn songs that focus on different techniques.

Fingerpicking- "dust in the wind" by Kansas
Powerchords- Anything nirvana
Chord changes- "wonderwall" by Oasis

None of those are my favorite jams, but they are the simplest form of each skill that I can think of.

Pick something new rock, it is almost all garbage powerchords and simple. Very little talent in the music industry compared to earlier years.

powertabs are a good thing to have. Also do scales, they help with dexterity and learning the actual notes. The guitar was made to play more than tablature.

Re: Guitar

awesome, the world does need more musicians. dont try to emulate anyone else. if you really want to enjoy your music, make it your own. take some lessons but dont let them influence you too much. just learn the basics then teach yourself the rest. trust me it will be worth it

Re: Guitar

that's cool man, i think the world has plenty of musicians now though. there's like 50 new bands everyday, not a problem though, I love listening to new and different music. anybody listen to the mars volta(listenin to em right now) but they're pretty crazy, nothin repeats itself in the song and the concerts are even better cuz they play non stop. i only play my guitar every now and then, but it's fun, i wanna get a bass to mess around w/ too. BumbleZC, that's a nice collection.

marsvolta.. good ---- i love how they have long ass songs and the most random ---- yet it all somehow fits in and sounds awesome..

first song i ever learned to play is south of heaven by slayer.. i learned it through and through and learned how to read tab 100% all in about 3 days..

i suggest you get to learning how to read tabs pretty damn quickly.. then its all easy ---- from then on.. first thing u gotta do is learn to play something u like.. or else ull get discouraged.. learn the cords and what not later on. so look for little frills you can play so that everytime u get bored u can pick up the quitar and play em.. so u dont get discouraged..

lots of bass lines make great sounding frills.. like the scism by tool bassline.. and laterlaus by tool.. the patient also by tool..
mother russia by iron maiden.. (the part after the intro)

daytripper by the beatles..

smoke on the water by deep purple..

those are all kick ass songs that will get u motivated.. and u dont have to learn cord for em :1

but when u do learn all the chords thats when it really opens up for ya :P

then u can play good riddance by greenday like someone on here mentioned..

just learn the cords.. and start switching between two cords over and over again till u get used to it.. then throw in another cord.. switch between the three.. add a frill in between keep switching.. guitar is ------- awesome.. i play for myself.. and learned everything by myself.. i only needed overpriced lessons to learn how to hold the damn thing and get me started on tab :1 after tab comes cords.. and its all smooth sailing from there..
