Default Guesses?

I just finished my turbo install -- took a couple of years, as I had to fabricate a shitload of parts. It's a t25, with an air to water setup.

I have a d16a6, stock internals. Engine ran fine before I started the install, and I did not crack open the engine at all to finish the install.

When I started the car, I got a squeal that sounded like a slipping alternator belt, so I immediately switched off the engine. Probably ran 5 seconds.

When I went under the hood, there was a light wisp of smoke, but from the left side of the engine (opposite side from the alternator). I checked the oil 4-5 times, it's full on the dipstick.

My list of possibilities:

1) Turbo got starved for oil
2) I didn't have any coolant in the system for this test -- maybe coolant pump?
3) Spun bearing -- I think this is unlikely...

Any other possibilities I should check for before I key on again?

List of possibility...

Exhaust leak causing the light wisp of smoke? Could also be the oil on the manifold or downpipe etc burning off...

The squeeling noise... A/C, P/S, or alternator pullies?

Oh yea, dont be an idiot put in some coolant or water at least into your system...

A light wisp of smoke is common. It's the oil from your hands, etc that's burning off... but usually that happens when the car is warmed up, not on startup. Where did this "wisp of smoke" come from exactly?

Part of the problem is that I'm the one starting the car, so I can't actually see where the smoke originated. I'm going to fill the cooling fluid, and I have to get someone to stand in front and get an idea of what the hell is up.

It's definitely possible the smoke was from any number of lubricants (huh huh, he said "lubricants") burning off the exhaust mani, but with the engine only running for a few seconds?

I can guarantee it's not the A/C or power steering pullies - I don't have either one

I knew I was going to get ---- for the "couple years", and I probably should but:

"Turbo install" included fabricating radiator mounts, new crossmember, custom piping, custom programming, downpipe fabrication, custom engine mounts, etc.... I've only got weekends to split between the car, house and son, hence the long time to get it done.

I can honestly say it's not an "out of the box", greddy, half-*** job, and I can say that I did all the work. It did take me forever tho

it shouuld be fine w/o coolant in it.

like everyone else said best guess is grease and oil and whatever burning off the exhaust

turn it oin and go check. if it has oil, the engine will be fine

i had the squeal on my car when i let it sit for like 6mo. i think is from no oil in the cylinder. don't know for sure, but i let mine run. the squeal was only for like 1 sec before it started while it was turning over. my .02
