personally i'd take the civic because its cheaper.

if you do decide to buy a 1.8t make sure it is a 180hp engine (2002-05). dont bother trying to make power on that stock turbo it maxes at ~220whp.

gti hands down. at least the gti would have some ------- options, ---- the base model hatch was lucky to get a ------- steering wheel, the ---- is too plain.

I owned an 03 gti 1.8T for about 7 months and that was a very fun and impressive vehicle, even in stock trim. good power out the hole, no real top end, it has torque, looks good, parts really are not too expensive, modifications are around, not as available as the civic, but there is plenty out there.

Me personally, of all the vehicles i have owned, i have never had 2 of the same make.......i like a nice variety. new projects are more fun then doing a project with something you already know, the fun is in the learning experience to me.

GTI.Honda is great if your wanting to build a stupid fast fwd but the GTI is way more car as you get some luxury to go with the small car feel.I agree that the VW feels like a much bigger heavier brick like ride but they feel alot better at 125mph than a Civic.

dont get either. if you must go VW go with a coupe, or sedan. passat, audi a4/s4/s6/a6. I have a4 its nice, great winter driving. but I prefer driving my civic.
if you must get a civic dont get that one its too -----fied. get a 5th gen or 2000 si.
vw/audi are hard to get parts for I still havent had any modification for my audi. except for ricer muffler.

Resident VW guy here... telling you that if the choice is between an EK and a MK4... buy an EK.

Last customer MK4 1.8t to roll through here was a stock turbo '00 1.8t (150hp stock). It was modded a bit, up around 22psi, chip, exhaust and we were doing a front mount. I took Dustin (turbohf) for a ride in it just so we could laugh at 18psi by 2400rpm and the fact that is was soo slow.

If you buy a MK4 1.8t just know that you might as well be buying a N/A car you're going to have to turbocharge because the factory stuff is ----. And the computer is too smart to be fooled, you can't dumb it back to OBD1 and have one of your friends chip it... all and all... unless you're going to leave it stock and sit in traffic every day, EK all the way.

car to drive: MK4 GTI.....looks hot, dont want to ------ work on it, dont want the spend the MANY thousands of dollars to make it kinda fast. stock injection sucks as Aaron said, its not a easy fix like a Honda, its full on standalone... its also a heavy bitch...

car to build: EK...what the ---- cant you do to this car? the EK pictured made like 472whp, with a chipped ECU, thats like 140bucks vs full standalone... parts cost less than the VW, and its easy to work on...your friends wont have to be tricked into coming over and helping

that car was sooo slow...****** hit 18-22psi by 2500rpms...then tappered off to like 12psi by redline

man, you need a 03 tdi jetta. slam it on some 18' and up the boost and its a bad *** car. my friends got one with like 22 psi and pull intake and exhuast (side pipes baby). he makes like 130 whp and olmost 360 torque. it pulls so hard, and i love how reverse is positioned on the shifter. crazy germans.
or you could buy and older gti and a hatch, still spending about the same amount of money as a newer vw.
