I do know that during Vietnam, the average amount of ammunition expended per confirmed kills of VC was over 100 rds.
Between WWI & WWII, there were over 60,000,000 (military/non-military included) deaths worldwide. Even if only 10% of the people that died as a result of those wars from a .22 caliber weapon. It's 6,000,000 would trump the last 50 years. Another thing to consider is how poor some of the countries involved in these wars were. .22's are cheap. Always have been. Makes it easy for people w/ less money to attain, and therefore defend yourself with.

For the sake of your argument, let's just say 5% from those two wars may have been killed by .22's. That's still 3M people.
