but it can be costly.

all in all, the previously mentioned friend who's PSU failed cost them nearly $250 in new parts. All could have been avoided for a GOOD $75 power supply.

Throw another 1024 DDR stick in there and I'd be happy with it. Good deal for the buy.

And I've had 3 power supplies crap out on me over time, one killed a hard drive. Always invest in a good power supply. ;)

/yourself for getting less than 3ghz.. i got my 2.2ghz p4 board and cpu for free :l

1gb ram though is ------- sweet. i picked up a 512 for $50 and kicking myself for not getting another for that price.

ever since i've had 2 power supplies die on me (killed 1 40gb hd and 1 cpu) i don't suggest anything less than 400w, especially if you have a few fans or other extras.

yeha eMachines are bad for motherboards ad power supplies.

That is the only thing i'm worried about, but thats what warranty is for right?!!

ghz isn't everything, amd doesnt even make a processor over 2.8 ghz. and amd>intel

it doesnt work like that. He'd have to get 2 more 512 sticks, then that would be even worse cuz the board probably wont do 4x512 @ 1T timings and some wont even run them @ ddr400, some default to ddr333 w/ 4 sticks.

go get an enermax or antec power supply. 350w should be enough.

wattage means nothing in the "quality" of a power supply. Most high powered systems (P4 EE, 2gb ram SLi) will draw a max 250w DC power. so getting a quality 350-400w PSU will be sufficient.

I agree, its crucial to have a good psu. one of thoes 30 dollar 500 watt units took out my friends brand new box. killed a 6800 ultra his motherboard and his processor. wich was about 1000 dollars worth of stuff. his drives were still fine though. psu's are just about what always take out computers.

amd processors will walk all over intel high ghz processors. because intel processors dont have the bandwidth that amd processors do. you might think of it like intel putting a CX 8 valve head on fully built b18c5 if it was possible. intel just doesnt flow. or ad15 with an sc61 on it. it might have that big of a turbo but that bitch isint going to spool it.

thowing another gig stick in there would work. the motherboard would just take it out of dual channel mode, well it should take it out. you might have to do it from bios. and your motherboard doesnt care if you combine pc333 and pc400 it will just run it at the lower clock speed. i have a 1024 and a 512 stick in my board right now on this computer. it works fine. the 512 is 333 and the 1024 is 400. and thoes are both very good power supplys. but you do need more than 250 wats for sli, or to just run a high end 6 or 7 series card on there own.

I'd much rather have 1gb in dual channel then 2gb in single channel. And Ya i know the board would just run it all @ the lower mem clocks but what I meant is that some board will run ddr400 @ 333 if you populate all 4 slots. It all comes down to the CPU, AMD's would only use 333mhz for 4x sticks even if they are all 400mhz modules. This was not solved until the Venice cores came out (I believe the 3500+ is a Venice core). But they would still have to run 2T timing mode.

Also, it's been proven that the cost of anything more than 1gb or ram isn't worth the performance increase (yet), Win x64 will fix that for sure.
I
U can get the Antec NeoHE 430w supply for $80. It's SUPER quiet, decently efficient and has modular cable design. It's a good choice.

i got it for free.. prior to that i had a 1.8ghz :X AMD. but it died and i had a bigass report to finish. went to my homies house and his dad had a 2.2ghz intel lying around he'd give me for free. FREE

im just saying, if your gonna buy a whole new comp, might as well get the best you can. didn't know AMD wasn't past 2.8 yet.. but oh well.

AMD > Intel

Re: Got a new computer

3500+ is prolly the venice core. Awsome core for a healthy room temp overclock. If your Bios/MB supports it, you can very safely jack it up 300-400mhz.
Im currently rocking a Venice core 3000+(1800mhz) at 2520mhz. Its rock solid w/ all games and benchmarks. Ive hit as high as 2700, but its not stable.
