got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
11 Attachment(s)
got the head back a few weeks ago after my buddy had it for many months. no hurry cause its just starting to hit 40-50 degree days here. i slapped that bitch on and the motor should be in the car within the next week or two. then its time for megasquirt since I got scammed out of $700 for an obd1 civic aem standalone. it was a hand ported job by my buddy and these ports may not look like anything to you guys, but its a HUGE increase over stock on both sides. head consists of stainless valves, bronze guides, 3 angle valve job, high output springs, high output retainers, high output cams, and a crazy ass port job. i cant wait to get this puppy back on the road. it's been a long year and a half...

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
oh and its not nearly as chunky as it looks in spots. i just noticed that. must be the camera or something..
|
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
too bad you didnt' clean up the chambers a bit around the intake and exhaust valves, clear up some of those emission "masks" would sure make better use of those huge ports you got
|
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
The blending looks very minimal
Looks like he just used carbide and never went to rollers |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
this is one of the builds ive really been looking forward to seeing completed
the turbo setup better be HD style to rep HMT or this is cavalier-tech material |

no matter what pictures, who did it, or how good it actually is, someone will always say that porting sucks.
there must just be something about cylinder head porting and that issue |

there must just be something about cylinder head porting and that issue well when its jagged and the finish is worse than stock then yes Ill bring it up |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
i agree, the porting doesn't look like anything to write home about. :-\

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
lookin good man.
i cant wait to get back on my car and get it running again. Keep us updated on how the MS works out on the LD9. |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
gonna stick with a black block? If its gonna be hard to see oil and exhaust leaks. Should be a fun car.

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
I mean this constructively, coming from someone that has done his share of successfull doing porting before... (me)
Those ports look like blaaaaah. At the very least, you need to hit that ---- with an 80, or 120 grit flap wheel sanding disk to get a crosstexture on them, AND to smooth them back out some. How it is, it's ugh. Secondly, port sizing is the same as anything else. It's a balance of getting the maximum velocity, with the minimum restriction. Thirdly, you really, REALLY should take the valves out of the head, and polish every combustion chamber. This will negate TWO of the primary causes of pre-ignition.
For the very little effort involved, you really should make those improvements. |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
jesus, someone had a case of beer and a die grinder.
glad everything is coming together pete! |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
good ---- pete! Cant wait to see it come together and back on the road!
Just dont let Josh touch that thing. :l |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
I dont know the first thing about what a port should look like, but it looks freakin badass all nice and cleaned up. :)
The one thing I do like about the head is the quench of the chamber; and those intake ports are freakin huge. The only thing I ever see in person is D and B heads, so go figure. I cant wait to see what your build does once it all comes together. Hope all the parts like each other and make a good system. |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
i strongly strongly agree with Toysrme. those def need to be hit with a sand roll. and polishin the combustion chamber never hurts. other than that it looks good but the job just needs to be finished

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
What tools do you guys use to port heads? I'm gonna have an extra motor sitting in my basement for awhile I'd like to try my hand at porting it myself. I have a dremmel tool is that what they use with some with some cool accesories or something?

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics

The tools to port a head will run you around 100-300 dollars for a real good carbide cutters need different shapes and sizes 60-80 for porting kit 100-300 for a good die grinder not an air one |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
yea i actually just finished going at it for a few hours with a sand roll. its a lot smoother now. it really wasnt bad at all before though. i think the camera just makes it look really chunky at points, but it's a lot better now. thanks for the comments guys and i'll keep you updated.

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
I've always used an air die grinder with varrying grinding stones, and a hand full of carbide cutters. I finish them with a 80 grit flap disk sanding wheel, but I've used 120grit before. If the ports are going to be polished... Then I pull out some buffing wheels after using a 300-360 grit flap wheel sanding disk.
Have a set of innder diameter calipers & mark the tool for depth, and mark the head to positioning to measure from. The biggest thing is to unshroud the valves before cutting new valve seats, blending the short side radious (sometimes easyest done with a very abrasive fold of sand paper on your finger, then finger your SSR), and fixing the bowls. The actual size of the port has more to do with where the powerband will be located. Port sizing has an almost identical affect on the powerband as changing the cam timing & duration (at the same valve lift). By hogging them out like they are, it's done nothing more than shift the powerband that much higher. Which is not nessiceraly more power than what would actually have been made across a larger rpm range by simply "fixing" what's wrong with the OEM ports. For just porting a couple of heads, you can buy a crappy 110v electric die grinder from harbor frieght. The biggest thing on a head with deep ports, is a flexible shaft. |
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
Pete you know i will still ---- all over you correct? ;D

|
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
Pete, those pics make it look like it was ported with a hammer and chisel. lol
|
Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
lol, I also have no idea what a "good" port job should look like, but that looks like it got chewed on by a ------- rabid chipmunk or something....maybe a crazed rat with a wicked metal tooth or something. If those are signs of a good port job, than I would say you got one hell of an awesome port on that head. :S

Re: got my cyl head back finally, few updated pics
It never fails, when someone posts pictures of an unfinished porting job the excuse, "It's actually fine, the camera makes it look rough" always seems to come up. :y Let's see new photos after you're done with the finishing touches. :6
