got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

Well i've had her for a few days but i just got the title today.
been looking for one for a while that had a mint shell but i couldnt pass this one up. I traded a VR6 longblock for her and i think it was well worth it.

1983 Rabbit GTi
230,xx on chassis, unknown mileage on engine

The good:
Audi 2.0 bottom end
288 cam
Audi T-body
Dual DP
some kind of 60mm exhaust
some kind of ~10mm plug wires
upper frt strut bar
big (~20-22mm ??) front sway bar
ghetto PVC intake arm
very clean and rust free upper body panels
interior needs very little work
window/door seals are in good shape
no tower rust

now for the bad:
she's gonna need some underbody work, the pass rocker seam is pretty much toast. the DS control arm mounting has been welded back on quite horribly. and there are a few other rust spots. the only spot that really concerns me is the rocker panel, its looks like a difficult fix.

there are a few wiring issues that need to be dealt with; headlights, cluster lights(its not the bulbs), and there is no stereo just a rats nest.

the susp is just plain shot; cut springs, blown shocks, lower spring seatsare about to fall off ,needs bushings and ball joints, and needs rear bearings......bad.

and it has a starting/idle issue that has got to be vacuum related. there are a lot od blocked off ports and hoses throughout the engine bay

on to the pics.... even though they are pretty pathetic

had to sneak a shot of the honduh in there

and a random rice shot

no major plans right now except for body work, the rest will just be fixing things

have a good day and flame at will

Nicce... that stearing wheel isnt stock is it? I just picked up an 87 Jetta GL Wolfsburg on Tuesday. No rust (muhahaha), mint interior, 200k on the odometer. Already picked up a cast iron turbo manifold with a wastegate flange... oh the joys of turboing an archaic fuel system.....

I shall call it Ugg.

...of the Lee family.

Looks to be a Grant GT steering wheel. I've wanted one on my car for so long, I love the design.

I found a VW for sale locally, driven like a grandma, 5 speed, $900.. but its a 4 door :-\

good luck with your project

actually its an old ass MOMO wheel. i've never seen one like it before. the wheel looks to have been rewrapped recently because the leather is very fresh

that vw is a waste of time.

Racintweek 08-27-2005 02:01 PM

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

when it tips the scales at just about a ton w/ full inerior and you can swap in a 2.0 DOHC engine without buying a diff trans, engine mounts, and linkge, it is far from a waste of time.

and yes, those are rado wheels on the hatch

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

Not bad...not bad at all. I like those vw's but just get the dual round headlight setup and you'll be set with looks. Just don't all euro with the super deepdish wheels and all that junk.

Racintweek 08-27-2005 11:03 PM

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

single rounds will go on eventually, and the same wheels that are on my hatch except widened

I wouldn't bother. Stock CIS will handle 160 whp or so, he can take a fuel distributor off an Audi 5000, block off the fifth injector line, and be good to 220 whp. Given the needs of a HMTer - or a 2000 lb car - he'll be REAL happy.

I know a few of the VW guys switch on the cold start valve via a Hobbs switch, too. Might want to shim the distributor as well.

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

it will support that power level but it wont be very smooth. boost and VW CIS dont like each other too much.
if he wants to boost using a CIS system get one fomr a volvo

Sure you don't mean LH-Jetronic there, sport?

Not to thread jack, but is an mkII golf worth tinkering with? its a 4 door 5 speed, no rust, $800

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

be aware of the "self machining" diff the like to eat its way out of the tranny.

Toss some Boge's and Neuspeed Race springs, go autoxing for cheap!

So it WAS a Mars Red GTI and now it's a Silver GTI. Meh... I had a car EXACTLY like that.

I'm not sure. I'll have to take a look.

unless you plan on keeping CIS get a DIGI II car, makes a VR swap much easier

i was just using CIS as a general statement, ist all the same style of injection

RabbitShit 08-28-2005 01:02 PM

Re: got another VW, this one is older than some of you on here

Turbo 240s still used CIS, and it seems to be the accepted upgrade on turbo CIS cars. LH-Jetronic for turbo motors was turbo 740 stuff and isn't really worth switching to. N/A 240s in the early 80s started coming with LH-Jet, which is better than CIS, but still not boost worthy.

Yea thats what I thought... I am going to be using a Volvo240 turbo fuel distro (same unit as Audi, made by Bosch) along with a few other misc. pieces.. Not expecting to hit over 200 whp. Boosting with the cold start valve seems kinda iffy to me... any idea on the reliabilty of this (im off the vwvortex to check anyways...)
