That would be nice for a lot of times you break the law, but unfortunately the courts don't dismiss ignorance of the law. It is a persons responsibility to know the law. The bullshit part is that laws are not written to be easily comprehensible by someone of average intelligence.

In most cases, yes. Regardless, I don't see them throwing an 18 yr old blonde ditz in jail or even charging her with a felony because she thought her laptop came with free internet. A lot of laws are common sense (ie. don't kill) and ignorance isn't a really good excuse. For something as petty as accidentally using someone's internet bandwidth, they aren't (in most courts) going to throw a truly computer illiterate person in jail. If you think they will, you're crazy. I'm sure there's an odd case out there where an innocent idiot was charged with a felony, but most of the time that won't happen.

Just find out who it is and punch them in the throat.

Otherwise just turn it off when not home, use a WEP key, and use MAC filtering.

Most people will not be able to get past either the MAC or WEP measures. If they are then they weill just be pissed that the thing is always off and on.
