LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Indie director Justin Lin has jumped in the driver's seat for the third film in the "Fast and the Furious" franchise.

Lin, who established himself on the independent film scene with 2002's "Better Luck Tomorrow," will shoot the sequel to Universal's two previous car race movies in the fall on locations in the U.S. and Asia.

The new film -- tentatively titled "The Fast and the Furious 3" -- will be set in Tokyo amid the underground world of Japanese drift racing. Its plot centers on Shaun Boswell, who, to avoid jail, goes to live with his uncle, a military officer, in a cramped apartment in a low-rent section of Tokyo.

The first "Fast" movie, directed by Rob Cohen and released in 2001, grossed $207 million worldwide. Its sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious," directed by John Singleton and released in 2003, took in $236 million worldwide. Together, both DVD titles have sold more than 20 million units.

Lin -- who was born in Taiwan, and raised in southern California -- directed, co-wrote and was one of the producers of "Better Luck Tomorrow," which revolved around Asian-American high school seniors who embark on a crime spree. He is in postproduction on Disney's "Annapolis," starring James Franco, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster, which is scheduled for a fall release.

It was just a matter of time until the third came out.. I knew about the story about a year ago. Kain, get that RX-7 body kitted up and painted flagrantly gay colors. After that movie's out your car will be golden. O0

i know initial d did that to me before i crashed.. and i took it easy

we're boned. driftin is only known amoung actual car enthusiats. not 12 yr olds who want a skyline when they're 16- and will actually get a 88 4dr accord :P

im going to guess, prices for 240's and rx-7's will jump up, and im hoping and praying because the AE86 is so old they'll leave it be. after all, all the cool street racers drive brand new cars ::)

word some dick is going to hit some old lady cuz he saw it in a movie. and that old lady is going to be some big wigs mother and they are going to crack down on everything having to do with racing and moddin cars. and its all because some guy wanted to make money on a garenteed "fad".

has anyone seen "better luck tomorrow"? its a good ------- movie... if its the same guy directing it, then this one might have a chance... i mean c'mon, its a n asian director... i'd say its 50/50 chance on the suckitude factor.

odly enough, of all the mexi-cars at my school, there's only 1 EG, and no EF's. 1 EK 4dr, 2 EK coupes, 1 EK hb, 1 2001 accord, and 1 2002 coupe. guess what they all have in common. ALTEZZZZAAS!!! the EK HB has a wide body kit too :o

used Hondas will be cheaper now ;) but now I'll have some competition come winter time at the local parking lots during snow drifting season. Plus now someone might actually buy those lambo doors from stealthmode.

Look on the bright side, to make that movie they need sponsors, sponsors will most likely be APC and other rice ----, so all the cars will be riced out anyway, cops wont even look at our low pro turboed cars since we dont stand out.

oh, thank god I bought my 240 last week and not after the movie comes out, this way noneof you can call me a poser.

you would be the only one to say that. most likely they will be skylines. skylines, rx7s and a corolla gt-s.

and im pretty sure it will be centered around paul walker drifting and needing more noss but then his manifold breaks, the diamond plated steel floormats fall out, and the pistons rings break. he drives it to an undisclosed location and the nos blows up.

Same here. After the first one I guess I just couldn't stand the thought of supporting a film that changes the publics eye on how they view the Import automobiles and their owners. I mean, it would be one thing if the movie were actually factual and not filled with the idea that all import/sport compact vehichles street race, fight motorcycle gangs, make their vehichles look like something from the planet mars etc, etc... The movies are kind of embarrassing :-[

i never saw the first one, but ive seen parts of the second one. like the first part where they hit the nitrious and the car looks like its going 2384 mph and the spedo says 70.
