Not that I'm a fan of layoffs, but getting rid of their grossly overpaid and terribly under-productive union workers is probably the best thing for the financially troubled GM. I'll agree that unions are a good thing for places where workers are taken advantage of, like third world nations where there are sweatshops, not the USA.

craig nailed it. half of gm is 45+ union fucks making $28/hr, when a college kid who would make $12/hr would gladly do the same job to bust through college tuition, and have to work to keep the job, unlike mr union.

did you even read up on it? no ofcourse not

theyre buying out the overpaid union faggots to replace em with people who get paid half of what they make.

doesnt mean they will be putting unqualified workers. doesnt mean they will do it all at once

guess which car company outsold all other car companies

thats right
gm

I believe that if they haven't already, Toyota will be shortly overtaking GM on this one.

there was an article a few years back about toyota wanting to buy out gm by/in 2010, it looks like it might happen. ill see if i can find it. on a side note, gm outsold based on product quantity, not sheer profit.

Re: GM cars about to be even more piles of shit

Correct. Just because a company is reporting losses doesn't really mean they're selling less units. It could mean they are grossly overpaying their nog workers (like here most likely).

Re: GM cars about to be even more piles of shit

"G.M. is expected to replace most of the workers who leave its parts warehouses with new hires. Its labor agreement with the U.A.W., which was ratified in October after a two-day nationwide strike, creates a second-tier wage rate of as little as $14 an hour for new workers in jobs classified as noncore. Current workers are paid twice that amount, which, including benefits, costs G.M. about $45 an hour more than those at the lower wage tier."

GM outsold toyota by 3000 vehicles, although i just rea an article that said every chevy cobalt they sell at a loss of 2-3,000 and they have 118 billion in healthcare obligations for all their retiree's, so yea they are doomed.

yes i read up fag. taking higher paid, experienced workers out and replacing them with people who get paid half as much. sorry but i work about as hard as my pay requires me to. pay me ---- get minimum effort from me, pay me well and i give all my effort.

you think the people they hire in place are going to work hard for 12-14hr WITHOUT chance of making much more? negative. as a matter of fact GM is probably banking on john mccain getting elected next year and allowing all the immigrants hes going to give citizenship to, to build thier cars for 8/hr.

It's most likely only the SS Cobalts they lose on. No company would design a flagship entry vehicle as a replacement to the successful Cavalier that drains money from them.

lol

my brother and cousin worked for one of those chrysler things where they put bolts into cars and ---- and they got paid 8 bucks an hour doing that same work that chrysler paid ither people 16 and 32 bucks an hour, for just putting bolts in..

workers STILL had a quota to meet and if they didnt meet it they got fired

theres quality control that make sure everything is done right

its not some chinamen country

the way i see it is if its between rotatating the workers every 10-15 years to get ones that cost less or sending jobs to china where we get no jobs and the chinamen does the same job for 1/10th the ------- pay then were better off sending in fresh workers ::)

Although GM workers are good, they are also very expensive; and that has put the company at a disadvantage.

Under their union contract, GM assembly workers make about $2 more per hour than Toyota's workers do.

And health care — especially for retirees — is staggering. For instance, GM spends more than $1,600 in health care per vehicle in North America while Toyota, with few retirees in the U.S., spends under $300 per vehicle.

GM can't pass health care costs onto customers, so it sells some cars at a big loss.

Sean McAlinden , an analyst with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich., said: "They haven't made money on the passenger car since the mid 1980s."

Take the Chevy Cobalt, a compact vehicle. While it's priced at $20,000 to $21,000 with a full compliment of options, it has been mostly selling at $13,000 to $14,000.

"They're losing $2,000 to $3,000 a vehicle," McAlinden said.
A number of people in my family either work for or are retired from GM assembly plants and those fuckers make WAY too much money for what they actually do.

Re: GM cars about to be even more piles of shit

Maybe they're losing $3k off what they would normally be making. But they are certainly not losing actual money selling cars. They're just not losing when it comes to the amount, if that makes sense.

Yeah there is a freak of nature fox body convertible at the shop that makes in the 500+ range stock block. Its got some small twins on it and goes a respectable 10.50

Agree. They had a strike at Boeing here recently. Most of the shits had a high school education complaining when the starting pay was like $22hr. Yeah some companies need a union to regulate them, but this ---- for unskilled/specialized workers getting paid what a professional does is BS. Like said above, hire some college students for $12hr. Hell I will go apply for $12hr.

Unions protect US the working class people. why are you so against them. Look at Enron employees or Delta, they lost their 401k, retirement, pension. If they were unionized that would have been taken care of by the union and those people wouldnt have to work now until the day they die. Look at wal-mart wtf?! The company I work for is non-union but they treat us VERY well, and until they show otherwise there is no need for it. All of the auto manufacturers used to be horrible to the employees.

Who are the ones making too much money? the people that go in every day and work to put food on their families plates, or the guys sitting on top of the ladder doing nothing but pencil whipping and making millions a year shitting on everyone else in the company. I'm glad the union has GM by the balls, they are just going to make detroit even poorer yet paying people minnimum wage like wal mart

Most unions nowadays do a lot more harm than good for the company as a whole. A great example is the company my father worked for for 25 years; Bijur Lubricating Corp. The Union there was greedy when new owners purchased their Bennington VT plant. They didn't want to take any pay cuts whatsoever. (most employees were making VERY good money and not doing ---- on the job, my dad tells me crazy stories how they had a keg in the bathroom, just basically partied at work before holidays, ect... bottom line is they had it too good) so after a while the owners said ---- you, we'll outsource, and they did.

Most companies now pay competetivly because most workers can go elsewhere if they are treated like ----. That's why unions ruin companies.

ford will do the same thing here shortly. they are just too broke right now. they'll sell off one of their sub-companies and follow in GM and chryslers foot steps.

I have worked inside of honda plants and a gm plant in dayton. I am a union electrician . There is a world of difference. The so called lazy asses as gm making 28/hr are mataince people, they dont do ---- but wait, but if a line breaks and they are down and hour. thats mad cash lost. They are cheaper to have wait and do nothing than call people in to fix something at 3am. The line workers dont make as much i dont believe. I knew a girl who worked at "Behr"/Chrystler working union on the line and she only made 11/hr. At "F&P" Honda every one is making dick as far as money but they thrive on dumb high school drop outs doinng one tast such as nut welding or repair welds on the sub frames after it comes out of the robot cells. Even though Honda is strictly Non-union they still always hire a union contractors for all there electrical work so they get there ---- installed correctly
