getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
My pc/dsl modem is in my living room.
i finally have enough cash flow ::) to get xbox live again. What sucks is that my xbox is in my entertainment room. My dsl modem is a wireless modem as well. What would I need to get signal to my xbox, and maybe another pc(in that same room)? The cheaper the better. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
do you have a 360 or the old xbox? If you have the 360, buy a wireless adapter for it. or, plug in your modem closer to or in the entertainment room and buy a wifi adapter for the PC.
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
Move the modem into the room with the Xbox and other PC. Buy a wireless router. Hardwire the Xbox and PC in that room and have the PC in the other room connect via wireless.
You could also just buy a wired router and run network cables to the other room. This may or may not be hard based on what kind of house you own. Single floor houses with a decent sized attic are very easy. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
Very simple.
1. Get a wireless adapter for the xbox 2. Get a long ethernet cord 3. Get a linksys wrt54 router off ebay, install dd-wrt, and use it as a wireless bridge to connect your xbox to it with an ethernet cord. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
I have the first xbox.
There's no way I can have the modem in the entertainment room cus there's no phone jack there(dsl). I'm not gona pay the stupid phone company to install one either. I'd do it myself, but I don't have the special key needed to open that box outside the house. I'm not gona run 100ft of cable all over the house either. That's just ------- ghetto. But what you said about the wifi adapter thing is the first thing I thought about then remembered there's no phone jack there. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
Wired is way faster than wireless. Like 2-6x faster(depending on signal strength). You live in Cali right? Is it a single level house? If so, it's probably all of 1500 sq ft. Run the damn cable through the attic, buy some network face plates from home depot. Then when you sell the house you can say part of its wired for a home network.
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
I live in Washington.
The house doesn't have a real attic. Just enough crawl space for the olson twins to fit through. But I'm thinking I might have to just purchase lots of ethernet wire and run it along the wall/under the carpet. |

You can either buy the wireless adaptor or get another linksys router and set it up as a wireless bridge so you can plug in your xbox to the router (located in the same room as the xbox) with ethernet and use the wireless connection from the DSL Modem/router. Those are your two options if you don't want to run wire. |

You can probably find the router for very damn cheap on ebay or a yardsale or some crap. WRT54G or WRT54GS will work. Good thing about using the router is that you can hook up to 4 things to it in your room and share the wireless connection. If the signal is poor you can either build ghetto "boosters" or buy the "high gain" antennas. You could get the xbox wireless adaptor, but if you're far from the wireless router, you might not get a very good signal. At least on the router it's multipurpose, supports multiple things, and you can boost the signal fairly easily. |

Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
He said his modem is also a wireless router, so...
If he was far from the router and has a bad signal, or has more than one thing in the room he'd want online; I'd get a second router and use it as a bridge. If he's close to the wireless modem/router, has nothing else in the room he'd want online, and could find an xbox wireless adapter cheaper than a router, I'd go with that. He said he wanted to get it to his PC and xbox, and has a wireless router already. Best bet: WRT54G. Cheap, easy to find, multipurpose, easy to setup. d112, buy a router and let me know when you get it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Linksys-WRT54G-W...QQcmdZViewItem <- it's at less than $30 right now. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
With the wireless enabled, I can get wireless through my laptop all the way to the other end of my house. It's a bit slower, but not drastically.
I'm gona buy a wireless router because I also want internet on that other pc. I'll be bumping this thread up once I receive it so you can help me out, Jorsher. Thanks guys. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
i've got a wireless adapter for the xbox 360 you can have, if it will work with your regular xbox. i'm in kirkland.
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
Have, as in for free? I'll take it and test it out.

Would that one be ok? I'll only be getting one, since my current dsl modem has wireless capabilities. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
That's the same one I have, a speedbooster, SHOULD work...
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
Well, decided i couldn't wait anymore, so I went and bought a new WRT54G.
Now, how do I go about setting it up? |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
ok, I'm using this how to right here
http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...VIEWTMP=Linear my problem is, I can't get into the ------- router setup thing. For my dsl modem, it's 192.168.0.1, and I know that for linksys its 192.168.1.1, but it doesn't let me go in. i don't know wtf is wrong. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
most wireless crap name is 54mbits and typical lan wired cat5 etc connection will be 100mbits. unless you have gig hardware in which it would be 1000mbits 8)

Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
ok, finally got into the admin section.
Now, when I upgrade the firmware, it says "upgrade are fail". anyone care to explain? |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
ahahah upgrade are fail nice
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
Yea, I know. It's ------- retarded.
I had to read it twice to make sure I was reading it correctly. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
go to dd-wrt.com and download and install the correct firmware for your model router.
Did you connect your computer to the router with a ethernet cable? You can upgrade the firmware with wireless but if something happens you run the risk of bricking the router, and it'll need to be connected via ethernet anyway. Make sure you have the right firmware from dd-wrt.com and hopefully "upgrade are succeed" |

And yes, I connected my router to the computer |

Probably the same one you have, but try that. Guess it's the same software for all routers. |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
This is what happens after I click browse, find the file, then hit upgrade
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...earefailed.jpg If i click continue, it looks as if its upgrading, but a few minutes later another pop up comes up saying "upgrade are failed" |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
lol...ok try updating to the newest linksys firmware first, then the dd-wrt one.
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
------- ----, this is pissing me off.
Now it won't let me get into the user panel thing. It won't accept "admin" for the p/w anymore. I never touched that part of the configuration system. do you have aim? |
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is
yeah click the aim thing next to my name :P
|
Re: getting internet to gaming console in a different room than router/modem is at
ok, found out how to reset it. Got back in.
Do I just reset it back to factory defaults? Or where do I get the latest firmware? |
