power band is nice but from the sounds of it a 4stroke would be better for his type of riding

I used to race amature motocross when I was younger and some pro events when I got old enough so I have over 14 years of riding expierence and I'm only 18. If I was you I would opt of a four stroke since you will be riding a lot of trails and mountains and won't be using a lot of top end power like a yamaha yz 125 produces. I rode for a Yamaha dealer as my main coprorate sponser and I will tell you a YZ 125 will be the closest thing to a full on race bike you can buy off a showroom floor and probably wouldn't be too wuited for your riding style and ability. Any of the yamaha 4 strokes are great bikes to learn on and a 250f will give you more than you need and plenty of room to grow.

no doubt 2 stroke is awesome, but the new crf and yzf 450 ------- dominate alota ---- power all over the map.

you should definitely at least go 250, you would hate a 125.

yamaha yz 250 style, or a honda.

yamaha 426 *drool*

yeah i got a cr125 and i can just throw that thing around, but i'm also a bit bigger then you. i would go with a xr250 or maybe even something bigger. a four stroke is a good trail bike... but a 2 stroke can "kick" let me tell you

xr250 would be good for you, ok power, good terctablility, cheap these days, good starter bike. a 2 stroke powerband may own you, but i personally prefer a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke. i rode a yzf426 not long ago, it was ***** out yes, but nothing like a 2 stroke for me

Only if the 4-stroke is 2x the size. If you pair an equal sized 2 stroke next to an equal sized 4 stroke the 2 stroke will eat the 4 stroke alive. The only reason the 4 strokes are eating the 2 strokes is because they have 2x the motor. Line a 4 stroke 250cc bike against me and I'll havnd its *** to it all day long on 36:1 race gas. ---- a 4 stroke. If you want to have a fair race give me a CR500 and you can have a CRF450 and we'll see you pulls away from who. My only problem will be keeping the front end on the ground.

As a starter bike, I agree with either a 125 or a decent sized 4 stroke. I started on a 4 stroke. 4 strokes are gay though and so are 125's. I laugh at 125's. If you want to get serious and actually ride/race, get a CR250 or a CRF450. CRF450 will smoke most CR250's, but it has alot to do with the size of the motor.
