I know a DIY antenna signal booster thread has already been posted on this subject, but I thought I'd throw this out here.

What you need:
Any router that supports DD-WRT firmwares (get a linksys wrt54g router for hella cheap on ebay)
High gain antennas. You can buy them, but I stole mine from walmart years ago when I was a klepto

Now:
1. Download and install the dd-wrt firmware.
2. Find a victim wifi connection and connect to it
3. Whoever leaves their connection open is probably an idiot, if they have a belkin router their configuration page can be found at 192.168.2.1, if they're linksys it can be found at 192.168.1.1.
4. If they have stock passwords still set, feel free to change the settings as you please. My current used router had the default password so I went ahead and set up MAC addy filtering so no other wifi-theifs will still my bandwidth, but I was able to set it up to accept the owner's PCs. Linksys: user - admin, pass - blank. Belkin: password - blank.
5. Connect to the router you want to boost the speed from and note the gateway address and subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0)
6. Connect your router with a ethernet cable, and go to 192.168.1.1 to access your router settings (if the network you want to connect to is a linksys router set to default settings, 192.168.1.1 might take you to it's settings, simply disable the wifi connection)
7. setup > basic setup > internet connection type > autotragic configuration (DHCP)
8. setup > basic setup > network setup >
local IP address: 192.168.x.1 (if the router you want to steal interweb from has a gateway of 192.168.2.1, set it to 192.168.1.1, if it's 192.168.1.1, set it to 192.168.2.1...just make it diff from the gateway)
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: set the same as local IP address
Local DNS: set the third octect different from the local ip address (if your local ip address is 192.168.1.1, set it to 192.168.2.1)
9. Network address setting should be enabled, and it should be set to "DHCP server," leave everything how it is and click "save settings."
10. Go to DD-WRT > Wireless > Basic Settings
11. Set wireless mode to "client" and for the SSID put the SSID of the network you want to gank (ie when you connect to the network, use it's name)
12. Click save
13. Go to status > wireless > site survey > and connect to the network you want to use

Now you can use your router as a "hub" for that connection. I was using neighbors' connections as internet for months now, but they don't get great reception and the signal is frequently dropped. With a simple WRT54GS router (greatest evar made, EVAR) and some "high gain" antennas, you can get a decent, stable signal..and the ability to ------ it out to 4 devices....for relatively cheap without much work.

I'm using a WRT54GS router, with DD-WRT firmware installed, and high gain antennas, to connect to a belkin router that one of my neighbors provided, to get free internet. I can only upload at 14KBps and download at ~120KBps, but for free I can't complain. With the high-gain antennas, the signal is no longer dropped, and I can connect up to 4 things to the connection without worrying about connection dropping.
