First Jobs

I'm a college student and I've been looking for a part time job.

My room mate is a server at applebees and with tips probably pulls about $15 a hour.. I was thinking maybe a Dennys or something of the sort.

Any other good places to work that don't suck and also help out by giving you tips?

Stay away from food service and retail if you can. Try and find something in your career field. It will take a little extra research and effort, but will give you a huge leg up when you enter the career field after graduating. Some companies even do an internship type of deal where you can work during the week when not attending classes, leaving your weekends free for banging the local talent.

Re: First Jobs

tips are nice but they usually mean you have to work weekends. i would look for an on campus job depending on what year you are you might be able to get a decent paying job. most the jobs at my college are just stupid desk jobs that pay ---- but there some reseach assistant jobs that pay between 12-18 an hour. and i will vouch that the food sevice sucks and i would stay as far away as possible

If you become a waiter don't be an ass, I still give 15% tip to bad waiters, and if they're good i've been known to give up to 40% tip. One dude only had us as a table and got a $10 tip from me, for 20% it wouldve been like $6 but he was awesome.

Re: First Jobs

In my case, tough to have gotten a job in the Political arena while still attending classes. Internships is about all you can do for that.

Something in your career field would be nice, but that might be hard to find.

Otherwise just find something that you have experience doing, is close to you, pays well enough and you can stand doing for a little while.

same here, where my college is you cant find a job in your field. They find out your a college student and you will be out digging ditches making 50% less than the people you work with

College jobs are always some bogus ---- unless you go to school in a reasonably large town. A lot of my friends go the the UofM in Minneaolis, so they just have regular jobs. I go to the UofM in Morris, so that means I just take what I can get.

Lifeguard, sweet job for a student, sure you have to take a class but the pay is good for sitting on your ass doing your homework.

---- FOOD SERVICE AND HEALTHCARE

The money is in sales, hands down. I swear to got i could make hellen keller buy a walkman if you paid me enough. If you know how to talk to people you'll be straight. Go to the mall and apply at every cellphone kiosk and at radio shack. Most places pay some sort of combination of hourly and comission, and with christmas comming up, now is the time to make commission. Plus they'll be hiring because it gets crazy at christmas and anyone that can turbo a honda can work a cell phone i'd hope

Best money I ever made was doing pizza delivery. Never had to touch the food and rarely answered a phone. Made an hourly wage and GOOD tips. Friday nights I'd be competing with 3 other drivers and still make $100 cash tips. Saturday was just as good. Besides, Idk about you but my car was my "happy place" so it was nice just being able to drive around and listen to my own music and not really have to deal with customers aside from taking their money. Gas is the only drawback, but you drive a honda. you should be fine.

I was thinking about it.. right now i'm rocking a 93 corolla shitbox that pulls 25-30 mpg on 87, but after thanksgiving im trying to get my 240 back down here which is like 20-25 mpg on 91... so about how many miles did you drive on average in a shift?

Its been a while... I have roughly an 11gal tank in my Saturn. Avg 30mpg. I'd fill up about once a week... sometimes a week and 1/2. but then again, i was commuting to college at the same time so its really hard to give an accurate mileage. Consider this though, even on a REALLY slow night, say a $20 tip night... it was still enough cash to fill the tank. Also, I worked at Pizza Hut and I got a $1.25 in "gas money" for every ticket no matter how far. Even if it was down the street (and yes, ppl lived down the street in walking distance and had pizza delivered) and u still get the $1.25. Just depends on the store I suppose, but gas really wasn't an issue. Spilling soda on my cloth seats was. D: ------ fountain drinks.

when i worked at dominos the drivers usually had between 40-100 miles for a 5 or 6 hour shift and they got .27 per mile but it will depend on the size of the delivery area ours was only 15 minutes in each direction

I have bartended off and on since I was 18 (legal age in MN). It is a good job, just kiss your weekends goodbye...just have to weight the options.

It is a cool job out of college because then you have weekdays off, but if you have class 5 days and then you work 3-4 days. ---- that.

I've been a bar tender, its good fun unless you work at a busy bar. I used to work a bar that was 4 people deep from open until close. No breaks, no nothing. Used to drink about 2-3ltrs of coke just to stay with it.

Retail or catering sucks, I made all the money i needed for school by working during holidays for about $15-20/hr working office jobs as a temp.

Wow, if you've made it this far without any job, why care about the money? Do something you like.

Re: First Jobs

I was a server for 4 years during college.

I loved the tips. I made upto $20 an hour and more most of the time. There were a lot of nights when I would drive home with over $200 in cash in my pocket. Do that three or four times a week and you are doing pretty well for a college kid.

My very first job was at a Pizza place making pizza. It sucked, and I got $5 an hour (this was back in '95). But I had fun because I worked with my friends, we used to do what we called "dough hits" lol. The pizza dough would raise in these big plastic bags, and as it rose the bags would fill up with some sort of gas. You could poke a hole with your finger and inhale the stuff! lol it was just like nitrous, you would get high for a minute or two.

Those were the days.

Actually, I worked there for over a year and then got fired for possesion of mushrooms. I was going to put them on my personal pizza but got busted first. I still can't figure out how my boss knew what they were when she saw them. :-\

Re: First Jobs

^^^^ i laughed my ass reading that post. I work as a waiter fulltime in a hotel and its one of the worst jobs to be had. Sure sometimes you make alot of tips but there are those long busy days when you work your ass off and you dont make a red cent (last night). You get to see alot of hot women in swimsuits but its not a very rewarding job.

I may consider it as a part time job when i begin college next year in toronto, mainly because you get to talk to alot of hot women. >:D
