I used a harbour freight hvlp gun, it's actually a pretty good gun but I have nothing to compare to. :P

i would go to a ppg distributer and by a rubbing compound ( tan color) and finish compound (white) and cut the clear coat with either a 2000 grit or 1500... dont go lower than 1500....or you will cut to fast and burn through the clear....
