Default 97 GSR build, from the ground up (updated 1-14-06) 56k = very bad idea

So the story starts with me picking up a '97 GSR teg that was stripped for a race car. My plans are to turn it into a street car with a turbo D or B... I don't know which motor to slap in yet.

The car comes with a straight body, but its is sun roof was partially filled in.



The car was missing the complete interior, gastank, srs, wipers, front brakes, spring, engine, tranny, and much more.

When I got it home, I started searching for parts through ebay, boneyards, local car forums and any place I thought I could find parts.


Starting off I found some springs/struts to put on my Del Sol so I can do a swap and my good suspension on the teg. This set me back 50 bones

I got some leather gsr seats for my Del sol a few months ago... looks like I need seats in the teg so that's going to end up great.

I first start by fixing a broke wheel stud in the front


I got on Honda-tech and found a really good write up on a tool that came be made from autozone rental parts.

Next, I went to the boneyard scrapped some 91 ls brakes. Nobody was 100% this swap would work, but it seems it does.



First I did a test fit

The I picked up some new rotors and performance pads and installed them


The complete front bakes cost close to 100 dollars.

Now I was on the hunt for the missing parts, stuff I couldn't get at the boneyard. I found this guy in Hammond that had the gas tank, lines, hoses, big hose, cap, wiper motors, wiper gears, and front plastic air dam.



I ended up getting interior, heater, AC parts, lines, upper ball joints, srs computer, air ports, and a lot of misc parts. That truck load of parts cost me another 100 dollars

Now I moved on to installing the wiper motor system. First, I had to remove the sheetmetal which was riveted down. After a quick discussion on HMT it was concluded that the easiest way was to use an angle grinder and use a punch to knock out the remaining rivet.


After removing the cover I could see where to install the motor.

Next, I installed the motor / linkage

Finally, I installed the plastic cover where the sheet metal used to lay.


Now I started doing a test fit of the interior heater/blower/vents/srs computer.

Now I started on the fuel cell removal. The fuel cell was very easy two bolts and I cut the fuel line to the cell.

Now I need to figure out what to do with that hole, but I went ahead and removed the sheet metal covering the fuel pump and such.


I found out from hmt that seal sealer does a great job of filling in holes, so I did all those empty rivet holes on the firewall and on the floor board.


I went back to the junkyard and picked up a AC evaporator and installed it.


Then I added the gas tank, fuel pump with new bag filter, fuel filler hose, cover, exhaust shields, and fuel lines.

Then I had to add a fuel pump connector since it missing:


I pretty much wiped out the junkyards locally, next I hit up the larger town junkyards, but I didn't find much besides a fuel pump and obd1 ecu. no pics for those yet.

Today, I made it to a u-pull-it in Baker, Louisiana. I found a pretty nice 94+ GSR with black interior. I pulled all the parts below for $170.

I started in the rear of the car pulling out the rear interior plastics and worked my way to the front of the car.




Then I started on the rear quarter panels:





While I was there I figured I should get the black seat belts


After that I noticed that the sun roof looked in good condition, as I mentioned earlier my sun roof is partially filled it, but I think I'm going to remove the rivets and install the sun roof. So I pulled it with the head liner.




Then I moved on to the console parts. Some of the console is broke, I just used it for holding the small parts from the entire pull, I will not actually put it in my car.


Then I started on the on the dash, I wasn't able to pull it before they closed, but thats OK since there was a big crack in the dash and they wanted way to much for it. I got the gsr cluster gauge which I really wanted!



Now I gotta install all this stuff!










Total
200 - shell
50 - obd1 converter
50 - dollars on stock struts springs to put on my Del sol, so I can do a swap.
100 - complete brakes with new rotors/pads
100 - complete gastank system and front wiper system/ air dam/ interior
AC parts/ srs computer
170 - interior panels, sun roof, trunk panels, headliner, door seals,front and rear seat belts, gsr cluster Gauge, and some dash parts
30ish ac evaporator
30ish obd1 ECU / Fuel pump
23 fuel strainer filter
-20 ( i bought/rent so much crap from autozone for the teg i got a free 20 dollars card)

Grand total $833

Unrealistic Goal
Be on the road at around 1200 (not including paint or nice wheels)

To do list for parts I already have
install working suspension
repaint and Install wiper arms, battery holder
Remove racing stickers
Fill in bumper holes and reprimer... maybe just replace
install obd2a ->obd1 harness and obd1 ecu
remove rust from engine bay area and paint it black.
clean headlights
install interior parts

Parts Needed/Wanted
AC Condenser / Compressor
a lot of interior black interior parts
nice speakers
shift linkage
D series motor mounts(found some from old swap)
maybe a rebuilt D16z6 head
maybe bumpers
