Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

Excuse me while I have a field day with this camera...

Anyways, for all of you that have a del Sol, you might have had the same problem as me: you want to put subs in the car but you don't want to eliminate your trunk space which is basically your only room for your ----. So what do you do? Start fiberglassing!

I created a custom set up for two 8" subs behind the seats. I took the stock rear panel with the two compartments, cut everything out to make a long airspace, and molded two speaker rings in. It isn't painted yet, but it is basically ready to be primed once its warmer out. Check it out...

As you can see, the glass runs the width of the panel and molds smoothly on the edges so once its painted, the whole unit will look stock.

Other side showing the contours of the rings and how it molds back down into the center compartment. I use the towel on top to drape over the set up for now so I can hide the ugly body fill and fiberglass.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/11.jpg

It's pretty cool how each sub jets out into each seat.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/12.jpg

View from top. It is a bitch to sand back there so its kinda rough, but you really can't see it from the seats anyways.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/13.jpg

Everything runs smoothly to the edge.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/14.jpg

The subs work well but they aren't anything spectacular. It is real punchy base and I have to throw down some kind of mat under the unit where the plastic rattles against plastic.

Now, for the new manifold courtesty of Rank1racing.com
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/15.jpg

Close up. It looks more gold in real life than the picture shows.

This is a custom filer I made for a pre-turbo water injection setup I run on occasion. I originally wanted the nozzle to inject after the turbo but the nozzle itself did not mist the water well enough, and I was afraid of hydrolock. Pre-turbo squirting lets the compressor wheel atomize the water. I am really skeptical about this so I rarely ever hook it up.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/17.jpg

Blurry but you can see the nozzle inside.
http://www.selinsgrovepokertour.com/pics/18.jpg

And finally, the beast. My Exmark LazerZ lawnmower. 72" deck with a top speed of 8.5 mph. All hydraulic turning, etc...

Are you shure cant find a smaller more restrictive filter? Maybe adapt a breather filter? :-X

Shawn 01-02-2005 08:02 PM

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

Yeah maybe I'll try that.

I know its small as ---- but it was the only filter i had lying around so I rigged something up using it.

Theres no way to remove the box to sand it down and paint it? Whoa boy that could be a mess. Must be pretty leightweight though compaired to an all wood box.

Shawn 01-02-2005 08:21 PM

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

Yeah the box was completely removed to make it. I only stuck it in for the winter to test out my new subs and see how it fit. Ill take it out to paint it and finish it of course.

Yea, that box looks pretty good man, should be even better after pain. Here are a couple of shots of a couple of things that I have done.

This is in a 98 Beetle

This is in an 02 Civic, there was no weight savings on this thing, plus it has ------- air ride :-X I put an Xbox in the glovebox and two monitors in the headliner where the visors where.

Thanks dude, I wasn't trying to thread jack you either by the way. It's not very often that people on this board post up that kind of ----, so I thought I would post up mine with it. I don't have many pics of the Civic job on this computer, they are at the shop, but I have all of the beetle build up here at home. I did a custom pod on top of the dash to hold a DVD player and then a custom pod on the center console to hold a 5" screen. Here is a shot of my biz partner's trunk that I did like 3 years ago.

http://www.revtecmotorsports.com/ima...rd/trunk02.jpg

I did some work in my wife's car too, but I have no pics of that at home :( I have been doing audio ---- for a long time (10 years) but the beetle was the first glass job I did, that was November of 03, the civic was the second and that was like may/june of this year and my wifes car was done in sept.

Cool stuff, Shawn paint that thing and lets see how she looks :-*

ZC4ME, I might have to have you hook me up with a system setup similar to that last one. Clean and non flashy.

Sure thing dude, the set-up in the wife's car is a cross-breed. The sub enclosure has some fiberglass, but the rest is nice black carpet. But seriously, you know you want a job like in the 02 Civic, the white parts are lexan that has been sandblasted and backlit...they glow at night...c'mon, you know you want that shiz, lol. ::)

Umm yea, I know which box your talking about, but that box is custom built for that Accord. The back of the box is kind of 'L' shaped because it had to fit around the rear STB. Here is a pic of the back of the box with the seat folded down.

I was going to post a pic of the actual box outside of the car, but I just realized my new laptop has no floppy and the rest of the pics are stored on a floppy cause they were taken with a Mavica :-\

That is a reflection of a windshield banner that is on the back window. Toucan industries is one of his sponsors. I think they produce the Ractive line of accessories among others. You know how sponsors roll, they give free ----, you advertise. He is also sponsored by Power-slot, Focal and Aerogear. Let's not forget, this is a show car.

That's what I thought, but I was not 100% sure. I am pretty sure that he has pretty much removed all the stuff that they gave him already and some of it never even made it to that car, it went on his rex which has been destroyed. RIP little rex :'(

Nice work on fabbing up the water injection nozzle. You have to wonder what effect (or lack of) having the water introduced before the air gets compressed/heated by the compressor. You would think that it would negate the whole point of water injection vs injecting it after the air has been heated.

Looks good either way.

FURACERMAN 01-03-2005 01:28 AM

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

I wouldn't put the injector before the turbo if I were you. Cool water hitting hot turbo blades can't be any good. Rust later on. And could the water get into the oil return? And I'm not a big fan of big sound systems, and form over function. But that is nice work.

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

maybe he just wants to clean his engine out with steam.

Reddy 01-03-2005 02:51 AM

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

That water is going to ---- up your turbo. 100,000 rpm's with a water quality of 100% is going to chew to ---- out of your blades. Thats why you need to inject it after the turbo :-\

manifold looks great. is that a small ihi?

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

Good work with the sub boxes, I used to be all into that until I just totally lost interest and got hit by the turbo bug. Still have audoibahn compnents all around with fiberglass backs though ;)

Shawn 01-03-2005 11:06 AM

Re:Fiberglass, new mani, random stuff...

Well I haven't hooked it up to the new turbo but yes the whole idea of steam cleaning was what I was going after.

Any idea where I can get an appropriate nozzle for post-turbo injecting rather than pre-turbo injecting?

got to the aquamist website thats where I got mine from. Costs about 20 with shipping and the shipping was damn quick and they seemed like good people.
