Fiberglass Molds

Well I have been messing around with autobody ---- for awhile and have been thinking. If anybody has any ideas as to what they would like made out of fiberglass, tell me. I could make them for you and sell them cheap. I am going to try to remake the lower portion of a body kit that was given to me. I can make pretty much anything out of fiberglass. Also I don't use that cheap ass pressed mat. I use the weave mat that comes out real smooth and quality. Give me some ideas for something small and I will pick the best one and try to make it and see if I can produce it many times. Then when I perfect that I will move on to bigger and better things. Thanks, John.

How about a gauge pod that mounts on the place right behind the steering wheel. That would probably be a good project to get your feet wet on. A memner here already made one by hand and it looked pretty slick.

John, all the local hmt'ers always have their eye on my stock hf lower lip. I don't think much of it, but they always seem to notice. :-\

Re:Fiberglass Molds

So you want a guage pod on the steering wheel console and where else. i could make a duel and single there. As far as the lip I am not quite sure what you mean. I would have to have one first to make and exact mold of it. Or I could design on myself. Anyone have a stock bumper that they want to donate? I will work on the guage pods this week sometime and I will see about the $5. I haven't made them yet do I don't know

Re:Fiberglass Molds

Well I do it the home made way. i used celophane. I just strech it over the part I am making a mold of but it has to be shinny or it won't stick. I will have to go to the auto body store and get me some of that stuff so I can make these more complicated molds.

Any tips for a first time fiberglasser? Actually I might have to plug up some holes from the side moldings on my fo doh.

Re:Fiberglass Molds

I have a lot of experience with glass. Check out the yellow car on my web site www.speedpartsrus.com . I hand layed the whole thing. Couple of things right off the bat. Wear a respirator and gogles. The activator in the glass resin causes pernmanent blindness if you get it in your eyes. The fumes cause all kinds of health problems as well as neurological ones.
The main problem with making parts out of glass is the shrink factor. If you make your mold out of fiberglass it will shrink as it cures so now its a little smaller than the original part. Every part you make in that mold will shrink and be smaller than the mold. This will cause larger parts like fenders to shrink as much as 1/4 inch overall. This is why cheap body kits dont fit. There are some good books on the subject.

Re:Fiberglass Molds

I think that the yellow car is real ugly. Why would you buy that thing. Is for a saturn. ::) But really, I didn't know that the fiberglass shrunk. I have never had it shrink on me. I bet that you use inferior mat like the pressed mat that has randon fiberglass all over it. The weave mat looks just like the carbon fiber weave. It is easier to work with and you can layer it in differnt spots to give different thicknesses.I will make something and show you what I mean. Oh and the parts that I make will be painted black to match your interior. If its any other color then your a ricer and it will still come black. Don't worry you won't be able to tell if it is plactic or painted. I have the right paint to make it look right. ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of something like this that would mount right behind the steering wheel.

Re:Fiberglass Molds

yeah, I was just talking about a single pod. You'd probably have to make them in different sizes/openings cause there's a lot of different diameter gauges out there. Like a universal pod that will hold one of the largest gauges, but depending on what size gauge somebody has you can just drill out the hole to be larger or smaller.

Re:Fiberglass Molds

What cars are you talking about. Civic crx integra? What cars do most of you have. That will be the fist one I will make. Also I won't make them like that with just the pod and its base. It will cover the whole steering collum cover so it lookes more custom and have a line in the back so the wires and stuff can go out the back. ;)
