Bailout Watchdog Calls for Financial System Overhaul, but GOP Dissents
Among the proposals is having a single agency take responsibility for regulating the systemic risk of the financial system. This falls along the lines of several suggestions by other panels and experts that a "super-regulator" take control of regulating the entire system. Some have proposed that the Federal Reserve take that role.

Critics of a regulatory overhaul complain that a strong governmental presence in the private markets could upset the delicate balance that exists in a free market system. They fear overregulation could constrict the free flow of ideas and competitiveness that drives the financial arena.
why does the government even give a ---- how the economy is? government is instituted by men to protect and maintain individuals rights, not to regulate the economy.

Military to Pledge Oath To Obama, Not Constitution
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is extremely frustrated with orders that the White House is contemplating. According to sources at the Pentagon, including all branches of the armed forces, the Obama Administration may break with a centuries-old tradition.

A spokesman for General James Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, states that the Obama Administration wants to have soldiers and officers pledge a loyalty oath directly to the office of the President, and no longer to the Constitution.

"The oath to the Constitution is as old as the document itself." the spokesman said, "At no time in American history, not even in the Civil War, did the oath change or the subject of the oath differ. It has always been to the Constitution."

The back-and-forth between the White House and the Defense Department was expected as President George W. Bush left office. President Obama has already signed orders to close Guantanamo and to pull combat troops from Iraq. But, this, say many at the Defense Department, goes to far.

"Technically, we can't talk about it before it becomes official policy." the spokesman continued. "However, the Defense Department, including the Secretary, will not take this laying down. Expect a fight from the bureaucracy and the brass."

Sources at the White House had a different point of view. In a circular distributed by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the rationale for the change was made more clear.

"The President feels that the military has been too indoctrinated by the old harbingers of hate: nationalism, racism, and classism. By removing an oath to the American society, the soldiers are less likely to commit atrocities like those at Abu Ghraib."

"We expect a lot of flak over this," ! the clas sified memo continues. "But those that would be most against it are those looking either for attention or control."

The time frame for the changes are unknown. However, it is more likely that the changes will be made around the July 4th holiday, in order to dampen any potential backlash. The difference in the oath will actually only be slight. The main differences will be the new phrasing. It is expected that the oath to the Constitution will be entirely phased out within two years.

Rangel, Other Reps, Party in Caribbean With Citi Fund

"Six Democratic members of Congress enjoyed a Caribbean junket sponsored by Citigroup after Congress had approved the $700 billion bailout of financial services firms in October.
The National Legal and Policy Center, a watchdog group, has asked Neil Barofsky, the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, for a formal review of the Citigroup’s sponsorship of the trip by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel and five others.
The NLPC says the trip violated House rules.

In addition to Rangel, other members of Congress who attended were Donald Payne of New Jersey, Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick of Michigan, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, and Donna Christensen, the delegate to the House from the United States Virgin Islands."

Public support for the economic recovery plan crafted by President Obama and congressional Democrats has slipped a bit over the past week. At the same time, expectations that the plan will quickly become law have increased.

Forty-two percent (42%) of the nation’s likely voters now support the president’s plan, roughly one-third of which is tax cuts with the rest new government spending. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 39% are opposed to it and 19% are undecided. Liberal voters overwhelmingly support the plan while conservatives are strongly opposed

you dont even see a slight connection? Economy in the crapper=more crime/murder/chaos=people start losing their right to life/liberty/pursuit of happiness. Im not saying they should stick their head into everything without limit, but they should at least have an interest in it lol. Also, if their is less money changing hands, less taxes are paid, and the govt goes bankrupt and cant do ----, including fund the armed forces, pave roads, etc, etc. At least thats how I see it, I'm no expert. You cant just kick the whole govt to the curb johnny

same argument over and over.

constitutional government doesn't need all that money.

the more money the govt controls the less freedom and liberty we all have.

you don't need to be rich or wealthy to have life liberty and happiness. when the govt controls everything you do, and your money, your business, and taxes the hell out of you... you have no liberty
