Favorite bov

I'm looking to get a new bov for high boost. I've had a ebay special for a while and it's just not going to be up to hold higher boosts.

The two bovs I've been looking at is the Hks SSQV and the Tial bov.

Pros and cons of each?

I like the tial better, but it's like $70 more... is it that much better?

I've always been partial to the Greddy Type-S. Never found one that sounded better

I run a Forge. Has 4 different springs for whatever kind of PSI you're looking for. And bolts right onto a 1g dsm flange

Re: Favorite bov

HKS ftw!

although my DSM sounds pretty sweet at 11.5psi O0

Re: Favorite bov

ssqv is a little too chirpy in my opinion, although it is wicked good quality, but i gotta say blitz hands down, for the mad tyte jdm style, and woosh O0

Whatever you get, make sure it's not a TurboXS. Lamest sounding BOV ever...it's like a yawn. Wooooshawww.

Re: Favorite bov

HKS SSQV gets my vote. Still havent gotten one but i'll prob get the knockoff. Greddy Type-S is cool cus u can sound like Paul Walker in the beginning of F&F. Had the TurboXS Type H-RFL, ---- was pimp, could hear it from blocks away. Right now rockin the crushed 1g bov, which i think i crushed too much and it doesnt wanna blow off right at low boost lol, no surge though so i think i'm str8. Was better b4 i crushed it :1

eh, turboxs arent bad still. Better than some.

I really like the sound of a Type S though. DSM's too.

no! on what turbo? when I was running a dsm I lose boost at 14 psi on a sc61 and at 20 on a t3/t4 with the blitz steady at 21psi

blitz ss, adjustable spring pressure, plus the sweetest sound I've ever heard.

Re: Favorite bov

I have the HKS SSQV too and like you said it's more suited for higher boost. Under light boost and regular driving it sort of makes a fluttering sound, almost like theres not enough pressure to quite open it all the way. But, if I'm on the highway or making a nice full boost pull, as soon as you let off the thing SCREAMS and can get so high pitched it almost hurts your ears!!!
I do remember the spring being too tight from the factory, I had adjusted it every way I could but it was alway's way too tight. So, I disassembled the blowoff valve, removed the spring, cut the spring just a bit (I believe I removed 1-1.5 coils) then I streatched the spring a bit longer and tried to soften it up a bit. I put it all back together and as I described above is how it is today. I can live with it :y

I run no dump valve, compressor chatter for the win.

kamilk69 07-08-2006 09:42 AM

Re: Favorite bov

hey do you guys recomened recurculating ur bov, i know the ecu dumps fuel into the engine when it goes to atmosphere, but i kinda want to hear the phssst sound,

and do knock off greddys have the same sound as real ones.

baldur 07-08-2006 10:29 AM

Re: Favorite bov

If you have a MAF you should under no circumstance run a dump valve that vents into the atmosphere. Idiots still do it and their cars run like ----.

kamilk69 07-08-2006 10:39 AM

Re: Favorite bov

yea i do have a maf, ---- so you wont hear the bov at all.

baldur 07-08-2006 10:47 AM

Re: Favorite bov

Oh you hear it if you just have a cone filter and not an airbox. Some ricers go install the MAF downstream of the turbo, but only some MAFs will do ok under pressure. You need engine management anyway if you're going to do any modifications so I suggest you get Megasquirt, it has a MAP sensor so you won't need a restrictive MAF in your inlet.

Re: Favorite bov

tial is cool but for the xtra amount it better give out bj's... i got a real hks n it sounds sweet and holds boost. thats most important...

type s = no go over 18psi, especially the ebay knock off type s

kamilk69 07-08-2006 10:57 AM

Re: Favorite bov

do my maf is gunna be from a cobra mustang 90mm and it is gunna be a draw through, and i do have a cone filter. my car is gunna be tuned by steeda of canada so i dont need to get any engine manegment, they have flash tuners.

One guy I know made a 2.0 turbo zetec, 7.5:1 compression and a T34 cosworth turbo and Pectel T2 ECU.
This is a plot off the engine dyno where it was mapped, it made a bit more than that after fixing problems run into on the dyno. Just look at that torque curve.

Re: Favorite bov

Apexi twin chamber...adjustable spring pressure, plus uses boost pressure to hold the plate closed while under boost, and then sucks open when you hit vacuum for a massive whoosh sound. Also won't hang open under vacuum like the dsm's or greddy types. Downside to it is it's massive dookie size, funky bolt pattern, and high price usually :P

The knockoff type s doesn't sound identical to the type s, but its not far off. It is ridiculously loud, even at a weak sauce 8psi. But tial ftw.
