Failed California ASM Emissions Test results
well i picked up a cheap 4-door, and i was trying to fix it up, dropped in a good d15b2 cause the old one blew smoke big time, and the clutch was shot.... well i thought i got the mother ****** in good running shape, so i go get the smog test done and it failed big time...
here are the results
%CO2 %O2 HC (PPM) CO% NO (PPM)
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS RESULTS
15mph 1829 14.0 0.6 130 305 163 .80 2.30 .76 835 2045 3643 Gross Polluter
25mph 1960 14.5 0.3 105 255 89 .69 2.19 .47 774 1854 2983 Gross Polluter
Max = Maximum Allowable Emissions GP= Gross Polluter Limits MEAS= Amount Measured
Fail Ignition Timing: 21 BTDC
Red shows what it failed in, this was at a test only facility, so the guys cant really tell you what to do to make it pass, but the guy said, that when engines puff out a ---- load of smoke due to leak in valve seals, piston rings, it damages the catalytic converter, that and change the O2 sensor, and adjust the timing, now he didnt say how to... if im at 21btdc, and i want to adjust to 16 dtdc, do i retard or advance ,and do you guys think ill pass if i use 2 catalytic converters ive done this previously on my old built D16z6 motor, and it passed...
oh yeah california sucks.....
my car might give someone a headace, but thats nothing compared to the thousands if not millions of smoke blowing big rigs, freight trucks, and school busses that commute on the roads everyday.

Re: Failed California ASM Emissions Test results
Judging by your numbers, I think it's just your timing and your cat is dead. Usually when you fail everything like that it's the cat. Your CO2 is a little low, your oxygen is a little high (ala dead cat) and the nox is pretty high which is the timing. To bring the ignition timing to 16 you need to retard the timing. Retard the timing, get rid of your junk cat and throw a new one on there and you should pass. You don't need two cats you just need to junk the garbage one you have. Your hydrocarbon output is just about right for an engine without a cat but it's wierd how it goes down substantially by increasing the revs. You may have a lean condition slight misfire due to the timing and or vac leaks.
Cliff notes
-Search for a vac leak
-Set the timing to what it should be stock
-Get a new cat

albert to get the timing to 16* retard it......but you can go back to 18* (in cali the law for honds is 16* + or- 2*) and i wouldnt get 2 cats, just get a newer one and it should pass (and the o2 if it looks bad) and as everyone says...heat up the cat before you go to smog
