Ethics paper.

I'm supposed to write some paper on ethics in re piracy (music, software, whatever) for a class Tuesday. I've pretty much decided to take a sociopathic stance, and am looking for any humorous verbage I can insert. For example:

"I'm like Robin Hood; I steal copyrights from the rich, and give them to the undeserving. Namely, myself."

This is where HMT comes in. Got any gems for me?

" I (joseph davis) am like michael jackson....i rape little white boys......

Piracy stops world hunger.

Piracy gets you laid.

Re: Ethics paper.

music artists are not what they used to be. music should be free.. back in the day the music sold was just the cost of the vinyl and a little extra.. now we are paying 15 dollars for a cd that costs 10 cents to produce... thats insane. artists shouldnt have to rely on selling cd's to make money.. they should get out there and make more concerts and bring in the money from there.. the way i see it is once you digitize the music.. and put it out on cd.. then thats like giving away the music for free... as long as the person pirating the music is not making money off it.. then in my opinion its perfectly legal.

system of a down recently made an album titled steal this album. and korn recently made a video that adresses the beurocratic bullshit that goes on with the music industry.. artists have lost track of what music is.. and they are no longer worried about there fan. but only care about making money. kinda like the way everything else in this country is going to ----.. with sports players no longer playing because its fun.. but rather for the huge contract payments.. with players being bought right out of highschool..

in my opinion, music piracy shouldnt be a priority for law enforcement. they cant even keep drugs out of the prison system. yet they are spending money on keeping track of people who download music off the internet? its just a really sad sight. it sickens me everytime i think about it.. local law enforcement shells out big bucks to track down and prosecute and make examples out of teenagers who dont even have money to pay the hefty they are issued.. and even with all the arrests.. its not a successfull piracy detterent.

the bottom line is anyone. even an 8 year old kid can download and install a peer to peer software and download a song within minutes and be listening to it. and its not like the artists are all broke and barely making it pay check to paycheck.. they are swimming in money..

Re: Ethics paper.

Buk, thank you for linking me di-rectally to your post in this thread via PMs. I promptly didn't read it.

I decided to sidetrack all the subjective morality crap and cut right to the issues:

Fact 1) every high profile musician who speaks out against piracy not only NETS more than $5 mil a year (holds true for the three I knew off the top of my head) but the number of high profile musicians who are pro-mp3 or anti-inflated concert ticket sales vastly overwhelm them.

Fact 2) RIAA stands for Recording Industry Association of American, and by definition the artist isn't who they are protecting. They are protecting the inflated contracts made by record labels.

Theme: the moral correctness of allowing journalists employed by a biased market economy news selling institution dictate what the consumer should believe under the guise of unbiased reporting.

To sum: ---- you, buk, you suck. :-*

That would be the "Business Ethics" category... and JD isn't Adam Sandler :P

Present a question for your paper... flip it back on the artist about the ethics of selling music (if you can call it that) at an insane price. Bring up the popular artists' target audience (poor, low-mid class teens) and how they can sell an album that costs the same price as their food budget for a week.

Whats the difference in the fine for stealing a CD from a store, and getting caught "stealing" music online?? I'm just curious if they are grossly out of proportion

It was a joke... I thought you were making a reference from Billy Madison at the end of the movie when they're having an academic decathalon and Adam Sandler was talking about the puppy who lost his way.

Actually, Business Ethics wasn't his category... his was something about the industrial revolution or something :P

Also, about the punishments for stealing physical property from the store vs stealing music online... I think it is way out of proportion. First of all, you're not stealing a CD, you're downloading a file, which isn't taking anyone's actual paid inventory.

Interesting tid bit, I talked to my mom in the past about MP3's and such, and she has NO problem with me downloading MP3's and Software (such as Photoshop or Microsoft Office) but she has a problem with me "using" the neighbors bandwith, ie picking up a signal via wireless. She calls the latter stealing.

DirecTV, please stop beaming your signal at my sat dish...I don't even want it, but I guess I will use it while it is here.

Just talk about current artists fighting against piracy because it doesn't allow them to turn out crap albums with only a couple good tracks.

Tell your mom that if you don't pirate the signal, she'll get ovarian cancer, have tt go into surgery, and lose her reproductive system. ;)

Nothing against cray but something to point out, If i pay my bill every month to direcTv then they are collecting my part for using directv, cray on the other hand does not pay his bill but yet still recieves the same service i get from direcTv; direcTv is not going to shut off their satelites b/c they are taking on a loss ,only when they no longer make any money will they call it quits. The music industry is in the same place direcTv is yet the music industry solely consists of middle men and few of them actually take place in the production of the music itself. When we are no longer charged for these middle men who make money where they should not then music would actually be something people may be more inclined to pay for.

That, and my mentioning of free cable made her upset, haha. And on the lines of what Cray said, I used to point my ole rabbit ears towards my neighbors satellite dish and picked up a ton of channels :6

And my gf is learning quick... she's on vacation and picked up some poor sap's internet connection from the motel room :y

Re: Ethics paper.

If you want to turn it around you need to take a stance on wether or not downloading it is theft. If you believe it is then your arguments can center on when is theft ok? If not then you will have to make a case for why it's not theft. I think most people realize it is, but since it's all but removed from consequence they dont care. A case in which theft seems justified comes from prescription medications for AIDS treatment. Some countries reverse engineer drugs devloped in the US and hand them out for free, effectivly stealing from drug companies, but they save thousands of lives. Good luck with your paper.
