Audi was the fisrt to use direct injection on a production motor and has won numerouse engineering awards for that engine.
The 2.0t FSI can be found in the A3,A4 and A6.

Yup, VW is running some too now IIRC (or maybe that's only in germany I can't remember)

Oh and here, not camless, but valveless, fun ----. I guess they bolted it up to an otherwise stock 5.0 ford motor and it was able to idle at 250 rpm and rev to 10k

someone posted a flash type vid of how this works some while back. things like this kinda make me wonder why they didn't just do it in the first place.

i've always dreampt of making a different kinda of valvetrain that wouldn't involve valves, springs or shims. something that would consist of just a camshaft that would spin and have a hole or lobe in it so that when the timing would be right, the shaft would just spin to open a valve...instead of spinning to press a valve to open.

what about telescoping throttle bodies?

man that ----'s crazy. that makes tons of sense though, less valve train components and basically unlimited camshaft at all rpm's only dependent on how much the solenoid can move. think about tuning the cam of that engine, man that'd be crazy, but you can get any lobe you want, nice. This is like VTACK for non-ricers. I hope they're still developing this when I get done w/ my Mech Eng degree, this would be fun to work on. I'm sure the development will keep going though, good stuff man

sorry i only read one of the links, but is this direct injection still going to be injecting fuel into the combustion chamber when the a/f mixture in already ignited?? also do you know whats the compression ratio in these things are? sounds very interesting, i have the artcle about a guy that had a camless engine a while ago, i don't know if he built it up i have to find it again.

the design is similar to diesel engines.

instead of injecting the fuel @ the start of the compression stroke they will inject it at the end, there for completely eliminating knock or pre-ignition caused during the compression stroke.
