i've been thinking about pulling my engine before i turbo it, to change the rings and maybe a few other things. i was wonder how you all do it. out the bottom? top? do you use an engine stand? hoist? i don't want to have to spend alot of money on a stand and hoist, just to pull my engine 1 time. any tips?
like is there any other small things i should do to my engine whilst its out, to make it more reliable or anything?

Alot of people drop the motor from the bottom but I personally have no experience doing it that way. While the motor is out while rebuilding it you might as well get a new clutch,HG and some arps. Maybe even do a timing belt and waterpump if its due for replacement soon.

 

every swap i've ever done was with a engine houst.. if you dont have one, you can rent them from most places..

but yeah i prefer pullin motors with a houst

 

what do you guys use for a stand?

 

Well you don't have to pull the motor out to change rings you could just pull the head and pan off and leave the block in the car, may be easier for you, and as stated before you can just rent a lift if you do want to pull it out...a motor stand is like $50-$60 just go buy one if you need it easiest and safest way rather then rigging one up

 

i figured it would be easier to work on it if it was toatally out of the car, having never done it before. what do you think?
another thing, bearings and plasti-gauge. wtf? i know the plasti-gauge tells you the size or something, but i guess i just don't get it. the bearings look like half circles(i thought a bearings were round little *****?), and the plasti-gauge is a line.??

an i just recently changed my timing belt, any other ---- i should do maintenance wise?/
any cleaning or anything?? i just want it to be reliable.

 

if i where you i would just pull the block, then take it to a shop and have them do it up for you.. but i meen if you feel you can do it, then go for it.
but sometimes it just better having a professional do the job right the first time.. no worries later on

 

ya, i know what you mean, but i'm a broke nukka. i'm pretty sure i could do it. it suckd because out of all of my in-town friends i'm the one they allways come to with car Q's and help to fix it or modify it. and its always something i've done before. now i want to do something, but none of my friends know a damn thing about the inside of an engine. they don't do any research. they still tell me that my turbo will blow up my engine. :P anyways i just need to find a website or something with a step-by-step directions. i have a haynes manual, but sometimes it sucks.
