engine management
 

ok i have a toyota and im putting together a kit. i dont want to use an fmu, cant chip the ecu. and i want to do this setup right and safe the first time so http://force-efi.com/e11.htm i was thinking about saving my pennys and buying an ex6 or somthing like it. would it be worth the money, has anyone used anything like this. i think i saw a vid where someone had a haltech comp. since they have turbo timers..i dont plan on running water lines. also they have staged electronic boost control and all kinds of goodies like that. just wanted some opinions thanks.

there are a lot of things that go into choosing the right engine managment. the reason the tec3 catches my eye is because of a couple of things. first off, its fairly cheap. i know 2k doesn't sound cheap, but think of what it can actually do for you. so knowing its fairly cheap, especially compared to the motecs, you may be asking: "well the em4 is about half the price, why not that?". well because i like to have a good interface along with price. the electromotive software is a ton easyer to use then that stupid programmer deal that sds provides. i like to see my fuel and timing maps graphically, not by some stupid pocket programmer.

if your going to spend the money, get something you will like. in addition to price and interface, electromotive uses a crazy crank trigger wheel, that uses like 60 teeth to figure out where exactly your crank is. the other might have this too, but electromotive's got my attention right away.

the electromotive only uses and 16 by 16 map too. you may think, "well motec has a 256 by 256?" more points equal better tuning? kind of, the smaller maps let the ecu do a lot of the tuning. the smaller maps are easyer to modify which takes a lot less time on the dyno. can you imagine tuning the 256 map? count me out. i like having the ability to do anything, but thats a little over kill. especially considering its for a street saturn that is less then 400hp.

another thing about the expensive ones. you're paying extra for the datalogging abilities. the more it can datalog, the more expensive it will be. the tec3 has datalog, its just not overkill.

the basic idea here is to find something that will be sort of "in between". something that is not too expensive, but still allows you to have easy tuning. not to mention, the tec3 basically tunes itself when hooked to a wide band. very cool option.
