ENC1101 Minimum Wage Paper

Hey guys my English teacher said i can use a forum thread as a source. Seeing as how the HMT population is huge i would hope for some good feedback. My paper is a Proposal Argument and for my topic I said that the Minimum Wage should be increased. I would like for you guy to tell me where you stand on this topic as well as share some expierences you went though financially. Also if you ever ran into a situation where you werent skilled enough to get a job.

Eh wage goes up then everything else goes up. You never actually make more money or will you ever really good money on an hourly job. Just bite the bullet and take what they give you. Life sucks. :-\

Inflation and the min. wage go hand in hand. Once the min wage is increased there is an increase in just about all of the products that people consume. When the min wage goes up the employers have to make more money somehow to cover for loss in profits. It's a chain effect, but overall i do believe that it is time for an increase, i'm not thinking anything too drastic but like maybe $0.50 or so. Change is good in small increments, and is less noticable.

minimum wage in WA state is $7.16, and if that goes up then so the the cost of everything else. its all about inflation :(. i have a part time job working 20 hours a week for not much over minumum and it blows, but that check is basically beer money and for gas. i think minimum wage is basically a motivator for you to get a better job so you can actually make some money. if somebody decideds to stay at a minimum wage job for a long period of time then that is their choice. most people use those crappy jobs as a stepping stone or a temporary situation while either going to school to get a better job or looking for the right job that they are qualified for. but if they aren't qualified for anything else then they need to be going to school to better themselves. its all about settleing, if somebody is happy making minimum and barely getting by they so be it. who am i to tell somebody they need a better job.

what are you smoking? when I first started working a year ago it was $7.26. its supposed to raise again in Dec. everyone at my store gets a .20 raise because of it and our union.

started 7.26, raised to 7.45, then again to 7.65 (current)

but yea, minimum wage is based on the economy. the cost of living in arizona compared to WA is lower, but the minimum wage is also lower

the increase in minimum wage you see is a direct result of inflation.

if there was no inflation the state minimum base pay rate would never increase.

by raising the minimum wage you will also effectively drive up the price of merchandise, as store owners will need to increase prices to cover the profit loss they are taking by the increased wage.

minimum wage here is so low that even if you worked 50 hours a week there would be no way that you could sustain life on your own. would tat be a good enough arguement, i think so.

yeah but sustain what type of life, you could survive on it.

if you are arguing that you cannot sustain a middle to upper midle class life on it, that is a poor argument.

as long as it allows to you live above the poverty line , it is doing what it was designed to do

ok, you make 5.35 an hour. your 40 hours will get you 214 dollars, if you can actualy find a place that lets you work 10 hours of over time, at time and a half. thats an extra 80.25. so 294.25 (mad skrilla) then you take the taxes off of that. wich here it always ends up being about 24% ish. SO lets say they take about 75 dollars out because of the over time. SO now we have 220 dollars for the week 880 for the month. the cheepest bottom line straight in the ghetto, rent around here. is about 450 dollars, so now we have 430 dollars. now lets assume your surviving off 6 dollars a day for food. thats 180 for food in the month wich takes us down to 250 bucks. now lets say 13 a week for gasoline. now were down to 200 dollars. car insurance for a young male? mines more expensive than this for liability but lets say 150. now you have 50 dollars for the month. you still have to buy soap shampoo paper plates, hopefully some grocerys maybe some new clothes to ware to work.

and thats assuming allot of ---- too, working 50 hours a week going home and sleeping on a mattress doing nothing else. Nothing ever going wrong with the car not having any expensises just pop up that you have to take car of. No health insurance. nothing. i dont beleive it is sustainable, and it is not good for the economy.
