in la a shop had a tire mounter and tire balancer for $800. each of those tools cost double that.
you know how much places charge to mount and balance tires. you would only have to do like 20 sets of tires to make your money back. if you are like me you know some *** drifters, they always need new tires mounted and balanced
i do know some they live down the street and one of them asked me how to hook up a boost guage :1

Running a business is not easier than working a 9-5 job. Especially if you run it alone. Enjoy having days where you want to jump off cliffs other days its great.

Look at most old welding/machine shop owners do they seem happy?

Meh.

Most people are either good with machines, or good with wires, and really kinda suck at the other discipline. I guess it's good to be me; I'm a flake sometimes and totally space ---- but I do what some people have problems with.

If there were a reputable and more grounded alternative 50% of the cars I tune would go elsewhere. Seems to be a constant for the industry to tell the truth, with the more grounded guys being bigger cockmunches... which keep people seeking out the spacier/good hearted end of the spectrum. I get a number of cars who are sick of RLZ every year, and there's nothing wrong with Howards tuning it's all in the way he treats people. Which I can't say I blame him for, I don't like most Honduh people either I'm just too far into left field to notice people much. "Excuse me I'm trying to work" is the geek's defense against forced social interaction. :P

I like to consider myself in the middle in both. Im not a huge fan of Honda dudes either. I love doing sales on HMT though. Everyone is on the same page for sure.

I would prefer just to build ---- all day and not have to handle phone calls/emails/tracking#'s etc etc etc but thats the way things are.

We got a guy who runs a shop like this around here. He doesnt advertise at all - just word of mouth.. I'm sure he makes a killing. Gonna take a couple years of hard work and long days thats for sure

This applies to both interweb/walk in/local business. People who have half a brain will pay the extra 5 bucks knowing they wont get the shaft in the long run.

Opening a business is almost suicide to your wallet unless your a business minded person. Also expect to put your own projects to the side for years has money that comes in needs to be reinvested in new tools, inventory, organization, product development, product error failure, downtime.

The fact car dealerships are failing these days you better be the best at something these days or you will fail.

yes you have to have a niche where you are the best at something as Chris said. You need a core customer. put yourself in the position of the customer are you the best value or is someone else. Being the best value isn't even always enough though because sometimes people will choose price over value even though it is more expensive in the long run. ---- I want to start a business.
