Re: this ecomomic time starting a business
With times the way they are now.. I wouldn't open a solely performance shop..
Alot of those people are the first ones to go under when the times get hard.. cause.. well.. noone wants to soup up their car over feeding their families / themselves. (well maybe not noone, but the majority of people).
You could make a ton of money by doing bulk work at a discounted price... ie: stealership gonna charge $500 to do a timing belt..
If you can do it.. do it for $350.. Lots of small work that's necessary type ----... then fit in performance customers when you can.
either way, good luck!

In weak economies [dumb] people will neglect routine maintenance to save money... leading to more expensive future repairs. Let's hope they skip the maintenance and go to your shop for repairs

Re: this ecomomic time starting a business
you arent making me a downpipe
no offense intended, but you arent going to get people to pay for turbo setups that look like they came from a junk yard
if you cant afford to build yourself a nice looking setup, then you cant afford to start a business building them.
this business ---- is tough. i knew that going in, but didnt realize just how tough. now i slightly regret it. i almost stopped once, but life didnt feel right without it

I have never stepped foot in a performance shop that wasnt on the brink of closing. Sorta silly considering 60-75% of the people who are into performance cars do it themselves. so you'll find that the money is in selling parts.

You are a noral person and drive a stock Honda Civic and need a stock SOHC laid in because yours is blown, sure thing $1500+. If you have an overly lowered car with a bunch of bondo and butt spliced failure wiring and a bunch of rigged *** ---- that has to be fixed when the engine comes out you bitch if it comes to a grand. It;s ------- stupid money for a bunch of extra headaches.

Re: this ecomomic time starting a business
basically the only way youre going to make it is if youre good at something. if youre just as good as the 10 other shmoes in a mile radius your either a) not gonna do much business or b) youre gonna have to work for pennies to pull business away from others. that usually means dealing with complete morons who want everything for nothing.

Re: this ecomomic time starting a business
Starting a business anytime is risky. Starting a business right now is even worse. If you can start a business and make it during a time like this, you're probably going to do alright. If you've got the stomach, the drive and you think you can make it happen, go for it. I wouldn't base my entire business around performance work though, atleast not in the begining. You gotta make a name for yourself first and let people know who you are and what you're about.
Good luck.
