engine swap tips

so i picked up an engine and trans for my crx hf...

engine and tranny off crx hf so everything the same...

gonna keep my old tranny... since its lower mileage...

had conflicting info on which is better? drop the engine? or lift it out?

numbering all the vacume lines..

changing water pump..

gonna put my dizzy and starter off old engine onto "new" one...

idk wtf else..

first engine swap... pretty sure i got it down... O0

engine + tranny fit nicely in the trunk of my monte O0

is that the only question you had? i couldnt tell. this all depends on if you have the tools or not. if you have a engine puller and a balance bar might as well lift it out. if your dont have those two might as well drop it. pretty much a easy swap. maybe take a couple pictures if your afraid you will forget things. i tried labeling things once and it didnt really help out because they got greesy and fell off or i couldnt read it haha.

Re: dumbass questions x3

yo buk, it depends on how you want to pull it. personal prefference for me is to pull the engine since we have a built in hoist in our garage. lifting a car that high can be dangerous to you... unless you do it the proper way. i vote for pulling it out with a hoist, i didnt have any issues at all pulling mine. done it twice now, planning on a third and maybe forth lol.

Re: dumbass questions x3

i have a puller.. so i guess ill lift it out...

other questions were what to do to prep the engine.. before i put it in.. lol

wtf is a balance bar :-\

idk wtf kind of info/tips im looking for.. oh wait.. yes i do.. i want step by step detailed i

too bad shits always easier said than done :-X

Re: dumbass questions x3

a balance bar lets you level out the engine from front to back in a rwd car, or left and right in a fwd car. not really needed at all but is sometimes useful. the best thing to do to prep an engine is to degrease it with something like simple green or engine degreaser/brake cleaner/carb cleaner. anything that will get rid of gunk builup and oil and ----. check for leaks and seals. probably take off the flywheel real quick and check if you need a rear main seal. i guess hondas are notorious for blown seals and leaking there. i actually need to replace mine i think....

Re: dumbass questions x3

i did my first swap with no help :-\ and it went all good.... i went from the top...no balancer bar or whatever that is lol... and i labeled the vac lines, but most of the tape and #s were faded away or greased out.. but just doing the labeling made me remember where they all went, so go for it. and other than that.... have some one there to help guide the engine in to line up the mounts....that prob would make it easier. :1

i dont know if theres a difference between swapping a d series and b series. but it went from night and day with a balancer bar. ------- tranny wont clear where the tranny mount bolts on. it went from three guys pushing and turning trying to get the engine out. to a one man job. also this is in a 95 civic not a ef. i havent pulled a engine out of my other civic yet so im not sure if its easy or what? i just know im glad i bought my balancer bar. i think it was 50$ threw jegs or something. just make sure when your pulling the engine to double check it and make sure everything is disconnected.

Re: dumbass questions x3

pull the engine out, you'll have hell trying to drp it through the bottom with the crx Xmember. i wouldnt bother changing the waterpump. and i wouldnt bother changing the vacuum lines, you dont need most of them anyway, besides the map and the FPR and the brake booster.

Re: dumbass questions x3

ok

so im gonna unbolt engine and tranny mounts and lift engine and tranny together straight shot up

drop em on the ground.. unbolt old tranny and new tranny bolt up old tranny to new engine and drop it right on in...

as far as vacume lines and ---- ive been told marker pens.. and number that ----...

gonna be raining tomorrow and friday but its gonna be a beutiful 75 on sat nd sunday

so thats when i plan on doing this... if i can find an engine hoist between now and then :-X

i dont know how bad the harness is on those but on my 96 civic one piece i took somthing sharp and scraped in what sensor i pulled it off right on the plug like map tps etc.. dirt and greese get into the slice and just make it easier to read :6

b-series in an EF you have to have the trans side way lower to get it to clear the chassis mount, then you can put the trans mount on.

d-series is cake though, ---- faced drunk is the only way to make it not so boring.

Re: dumbass questions x3

I do all my swaps at home, since I dont have a engine puller I jack the car up really high slide the engine under on 2 jacks, then lower the car on the engine.
the last time I rebuilt my engine I did it in 3 pieces since I was by myself. I install the block the car, then the tranny, and then the head, it was simple.
but a crx might me different.
and yes, always change your water pump, and timing belt while you have the engine out.

I've never done an engine/tranny swap with a hoist. That's just too much work. :l
