Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

Well I have a AMD 64 bit proc. There are a ton of programs that won't work right with the 64 bit, a lot of them that I need. Can I just load up regular Windows XP/Vista and run it fine?

Re: Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

You can run either. You will actually have less issues running a 32 bit OS as drivers for damn near everything work with it. A 64-bit OS will run faster on your processor, but typically people have so many driver issues they switch back to 32 bit anyways. I have Vista 32 bit on my AMD 64 bit cpu for my HTPC and it works great.

Exactly what I was needing to know. Most of the smaller software doesn't have crap for 64 bit, and the ones that do usually don't work. Now I get to look for a Vist update so I don't have to do a complete install. Backing up 250gb of movies/games/music would be a bitch.

Do you only have one harddrive?

If you have two just copy everything to it and format the other.

I plan on running a 32-bit OS whenever I build a new comp, at least until 64-bit is mainstream.

Re: Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

Personally I'd go to XP 32-bit but some people like vista.

My main issue is they changed a lot of ---- around and I don't feel like taking the time yet to learn the OS again, and I don't feel like screwing with any little quirks until another service pack is out...

I have vista ultimate for 32 and 64 bit procs if you need a copy.

Re: Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

I think I might try that. I think I have a copy of 32 bit XP floating around here from the other pc. Now I just have to figure out what to do about all my files. Might have to get a external drive from wal-mart and take it back lol

Hard drives are so cheap these days, I just picked up a 1 TB for $185 a couple weeks ago. You'll need more storage sooner or later.

Re: Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

I'm sure you can find an PCI card with IDE connections for cheap and use that other drive.

I don't know if bestbuy would have it, but one of the computer parts stores might have one. You'll make your money back and have another harddrive.

Actually I ripped the IDE 250 out of the other PC. Pulled the jumper and plugged it in. Computer started kept flashing a bunch of random weird crap and shutting itself off. After the 3rd time it booted up and the second drive works fine. WTF? Remember we couldn't get it to recognize it for anything. Oh well, bumped me up to 500gb and have a place to put my stuff now :6

pimptastic, that's kinda weird though. I bet it feels nice having an extra 500gb.

ahh 500 gigs in a desktop is still low by my standards. i like having the 1t on an ubuntu system that works flawlessly. but sucks that i cant use it for anything other than ripping, downloading, music, and programming. but thats the beauty of it. windows on the laptop is gayer than ----, as it just crashed on me last Saturday, lost all my data for that week(backup every week). so i re-installed that ---- and works tits now. just need to make sure i back my ---- up :P

He's got two drives :6

I have 740gb and need more space, next build will be at least 1tb internal with my 500gb external.

I like ubuntu, BUT, windows does everything I need to do without screwing around to make stuff work...and it runs at a speed that I'm satisfied with even though it's on an old overclocked amd 2400. I would love a multiple core proc for encoding though, that's the only thing that disappoints me with my current setup.

Woot got the regular old 32 bit XP loaded. Now having to hunt down all the drivers. Making a folder to keep them in this time so I won't have to do all the bs work next time :7

Yeah, cd of driver pack is awsome for people who reinstall windows for other people :6 The most pissed off driver to not have his network card driver. How can you get other drivers without this one?? :(

Yup, re-download the torrents if you dont already have them, and choose to save the file wherever they're at now.

I had to do that when I moved files from one drive to another.

Damn so I have to hunt down all the actual torrents? Man this is going to take awhile.

Re: Do I have to run 64 bit OS on 64 bit proc?

Damn regular ole 32 bit is a lot faster than the x64, wtf. Maybe it's just because I have a fresh load after two years. Anyways, that program for finding drivers worked great. The key gen didn't work, just keeps trying to get you to register it. It does tell you what driver versions you need though so had them from google in 5 min.

The programs that wouldn't work before are loading up fine. Maybe this will help solve my networking issues also.

normally the respective motherboard manufactuter/computer manufacturer will have the integrated video/network/audio drivers on their site... if you can, use the chipset manufacturers drivers as they might be updated... normally its ~15 minutes of hunting for video/sound/network drivers and i normally update the bios, etc. when installing windows for people.
