Distributor Shockness.....

how many volts does the stock ignition system put out?????

cause yesterday i went to Bongnak's house to pick up a civic tranny and he helped adjust my timing and when i touched the distributor it shocked the ---- out of me... this is the second time this has happend???? you think its a faulty wire... or improper grounding?????

and how many volts are we talking about 10's 100's 1,000's?

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

12v i do belive but you can get shocked by the screw on the top of the dizzy

oldschoolteg 04-15-2004 10:01 PM

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

its way more than 12v. How do you think a coil works. The voltage may go up but the current goes way down. You will be ok. ;)

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

when you adjust the the timming keep your hand away from the wires. they put out a good 1000 volts.

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

uhh try about 40000v guys, these things are powerful. I belive the gm DIS systems put out close to 70-80kv

yeah.....stock ignition hurts like hell

yeah.. its like 40000 volts with no amps/watts behind it.

even a few milliamps at 40kv will knock you on your ass

BoosTedZSix 04-19-2004 12:23 PM

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

i think the only reason it shocks is because its not grounded properly. well when its not bolted up and the car is running u can see sparks on that bitch. well maybe somethings fucked up. but i was shooting the timing on my cousins integra when they loosened up the distributor. i saw sparks coming from that ----. scary ----.

Try a MSD external coil.. hahah, they feel great :-X

I took a few aviation mechanic classes, and the magnetos on some aircraft are enough to kill someone of weak heart. Ditto on megneto equiped Ferraris etc..

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

You shouldn't get shocked if the cap is healthy, possibly a cracked dizzy cap?

accordepicenter 04-19-2004 10:18 PM

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

yeah cracked caps or loose caps can do that ----. Also NEVER GRAB THE TOP OF THE DIZZY when setting your timing, rotate it by the base. If you get shocked its not because theres a bad ground somewhere, its because YOURE THE GROUND

I used to grab 120 volts A/C for fun. It's not so bad. 220 is not so fun. I don't like to grab that ----. I lost a good set of linemans to a 220/50amp accident. ::)

you can set your balls on 10billion volts and it won't hurt you, as long as there isn't any current going on, current kills, not voltage.

voltage does make a diffrence.. trust me and boost.. we know.

lol, you mean "amperage". Volts will knock you on your ass though. Wanna give it a shot? I'll hook you up sucka.

BTW, I'm one of those guys that works with electricity. :P

haha, everybody thinks doc knows and does everything, it's pretty funny.

voltage drives current, but without current you won't die. current is measured in amperes or amps, that's why some of you unedumakated folk call it amperage. V=IR v is voltage i is current and r is resistence. if you have mad voltage with mad resistence you get small current and you live.

we'll have to try knocking me on my ass with some of your voltage.

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

I know your pain there Doc...I used to be a residential electrician. I lost more than just one good pair of kleins (linemans) to 220. Really sux too if you figure that around me a set of kleins goes for about $40. :( Oh, and the really fun ones around me are the 3 phase 600amp sets...i saw a guy get his elbow blown off when he slipped in a panel box. :-X

Would you like me to send you a picture of my cock so you can envy it from the privacy of your home? :-\

Do you seriously think 220 volts isn't going to do anything to you? You can tell me everything you learned in your school book, but I am actually working with this ----. What is the most you have been shocked with? Do you know the difference between A/C and D/C? Have you ever seen what a ----- ass little 120volts will do to a piece of metal?

I think it's funny when people like you try to come to work with us. They have all this book knowledge and mommy and daddy sent them to a special school to learn a trade, but in the real world, you don't know ----. Ok, you know enough to be dangerous, but you can't apply that to real world situations. :-\

if I get enough resistence between me and the 220 volts you have it won't do ---- to me, but as it stand if I touch it and I'm standing on the ground not floating in the air I will get fucked up. when you weld that's very little resistence, that's why the metal gets it's ass kicked.

LMAO, What?! ??? Ok, you can levitate and I'll feed your ass 220 volts and we'll see what happens, k? :-* I'm talking about grabbing one 120volt phase with one hand, and one 120volt phase with the other. It doesn't matter if you're walking around in space shoes upside down, it's still going to shock your dumbass. :P

well of course I'll get fucked up then because the current will go through me, I was talking about just sticking a fork in a socket and being grounded.

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

havent you guys seen how they work on the high power transmission power lines in california? These guys climb right on the power lines from a helicopter and climb all over the lines, even though they are like half a million volts, they can do this because they are not part of the circuit, think of how birds sit on power lines... they dont die. If those guys come within 12 ft of anything grounded, instant flash, they die (became part of the circuit)

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

It's not the voltage that hurts yah, it's more like the amperage behind it. It takes less than one amp to kill a person. And grabbing onto a 120 open circuit will definately give a buzz, but not as bad as when the circuits closed (and has like 9 light fixtures on it and all are turned on...this happened to me). Sounds like nuthin, but it hurts like all hell. ;D

Re:Distributor Shockness.....

i tried to use one of the old timing lights you put in-line with the spark plug wire on my CRX. about 20 secs into using it, it started smoking... kinda supprised and not thinking, i dropped it on the ground infront of the car (big mistake). that made anything touching both the driveway and car body a return path for the ignition system. i'm not sure why the concrete conducted high voltage so well, but it made getting into the car and turning the engine off interesting. i bought an inductive light after that :).

i read somewhere that if it weren't for your skin's fairly high resistance, a 9 volt battery (like you put in a smoke detector) would have enough power to give you a heart attack :/
