racing and riding are different. as long as it has decentish compression its cool to ride but would be not ideal to race.

i am 100% your a fagot....and your xr 600 is a dual sport bike not a standard dirtbike..so get your ---- straight the op wants a DIRTBIKE not a dual sport....i work part time in a small motor cycle shop and i see more pos 4 strokes than i do 2 strokes....and the last time i checked it was way cheaper to keep a non-race bike 2 stroke running then a 4stroke.
like rawr said there is a difference between racing and riding on the weekends...
but of cource your a badass **** that "races" and knows everything there is about bikes....

wait till you blow it up and have to nickle plate your cylinder worst case/i know), word of advice, for the 30 minutes and $150 it takes, for the love of god pls rebuild your bike, after 3 years it'll be like a brand new bike to you.

I have a 1986 kawasaki kx125. I go riding almost every weekend for about 4 hours straight and I only had to get the topend rebuilt twice in the past 4 years. It could probably use one now tho. 2-strokes win over 4-strokes any day......

ok "jonny dirt bike worker" u sure are smart........not xr 600 dirt xr600r dual eat ---- but you should know this u work for a bike shop ok for the ride on a wkend let look at cost 5 gallons in my big bore 600 cost 12 buck and ride all day , now a 250 2 stroke cost 12 bucks for the first 5 gallons of gas + motul mix which is not cheap, air filter oil which is cheap but still counts , 2 stroke eat sprockets and tires fast chains everyother set of srockets, like the dude also noted kx have frm sleeves which can not honed which cost bucks, yet to see a 4 stroke that need anything more then a hone, so just drop it the choice is his to make not ours to squabble about

i dint want to get in a pissing contest with you but when some 1 calls me out im going to say something back..but back to the subject

yes its a lil more $$$ when you get in to 2 strokes then 4 stroke but it depends on the bike itself also the new fourstroke race bikes need just as much attention as a 250 2 stroke bike...
when you say maintenance that means to me oil change/filter, look at chain and sprockets.. and there is not that much of a diff in prices between the two...
i go throw tires about once a year but i only ride on the weekends on trac and trail...
lets say you have 06 yzf 450 and you need to rebuild the motor..it going to cost a ---- load more $ than an 06 yz 250 with the same rebuild...do you agree?
my personal experience its easier to work on a 2 stroke than a four stroke....

if you're still new a 125 will be just fine. you most likely wont be getting into anything that you'll need the 250s power to get out of.
