Yes, the diesel engine is turbocharged and that is what this site is all about, but you'd be JUST as happy with a healthy SBC in a S-10. I have 2 or 3 friends that have or have had V8 powered S-10's or Rangers, and when set up correctly they are nothing short of an absolute BLAST to drive...

Here's what you need to do

Fiind an Isuzu 2.2 diesel, can be found in early 80's s10's, s15's and Luv's

then hmt the ---- out of it.

I'm doing a Cummins 5.9 swap in a buddy's 79 yota 3/4ton. I'll post a buildup thread when it gets far enough.

There are a number of swaps that you could do.

The 6.2 is the easiest / cheapest as it nearly bolts in.
The 6.5TD has only slightly more power, but will likely just die on you anyway, as well is more expensive and harder to deal with.
The 6.6 Durramax would be a nice swap, but costly $$$$ and time intensive.

In the Cummins family you can swap in a 4bt it is like the normal 5.9 in a a dodge but only has 4 cyls, less weight shorter easier to put in, but still out weighs a SBC by a fair bit. The 4bt is ~700lbs. Many of the mods for power in the 5.9 will work for the 4bt, and a few guys have pushed them to 600whp + They are commonly found in lays chips, bread, and mail trucks.

Next you have the 5.9L 6bt, stay with either VE or P7100 mechanical pumps, as it is a far more cost effective, and easier swap, the biggest downside of this motor is that you will have to reinforce EVERYTHING, this motor comes in at 900lbs dry, no tranny ect... Upside is power is as easy as a Honda.

If you are looking for fuel economy, I would look into doing a VW IDI or TDI swap, Acme adapters makes an adapter to goto 4cyl toyota transmissions, so it would take some cutting and welding but you could swap one in. Stock the Tdi's start at 90hp and ~130ftlbs, and go up to 170hp and ~230ftlbs on some euro models. The local 90hp VE ones have a good aftermarket and with some injectors and a chip, and some other small tweeking you can see 160whp and 300+ ftlbs without too much trouble. Enough to move an s10 around without any problem.
