Damage report in!

ok so I turboed my 97 civic this last september or so. I put a 89 crx si d16a6 in her, It's all I had and it was basily free. So the car runs pretty good for a few months. till about end of feb or begining of march. acting like I blew the head gasket. so I change that only to find out, after a hg change compression is only 50psi on cyl 4. OUCH! so I say screw it. run it for about 500mi and swap a y7 in that i got for 50$. I finaly we over to my friends house where the motor was and pulled it apart to check the damages. and here they are. this is probably the worst case of blown ringlands I have ever seen.with out breaking a rod or complety melting the piston. :S

I will give it a 5 out of 10 the rods were still in the block and not a half block down the street :-\

looks like all the pistons got pretty hot

shanerv 04-17-2007 12:58 AM

Re: Damage report in!

I don't really think they did get hot. there are not signs of damage on the tops of them no piting just a little carbon build up from bruing oil for a while.I think a combo of 200miles on the motor and 12-14psi got to it. the tune was pretty good I think. and I really have not beat on it that much. just the ocational pulls from say 40-100 or so.

yep well tt rods and vitaras, but the stock y7 will have to do for now. hey how much do you guys thinks a 97 civic 4dr dx with a 350whp setup is worth. 4500? might be selling the car this fall. built with above setup.

you broke the first and second ringland. You might want to rethink that statement, shane :S

Nice work!! I wouldnt have ever guessed it was that bad...

You might want to pull out alot more ignition timing or somthing, i dont think you were leaning out

Re: Damage report in!

I belive that I was only running like 19 degrees at full boost. only other thing I could think of is maybe my boost guage is off it is a sunpro 20$ guage

Too much timing, 25 year old motor, unknown boost level...hmmmm...I wonder why it popped...

Re: Damage report in!

id pull out more timing though, if it was lean those pistons would probably be melted too

Re: Damage report in!

Sweetness. Is the y7 in and boosted already? You should have seen the pistons from my b18 after I sold it to that puerto rican guy in dunkirk. He brought the pistons in to show me-- every ringland on every piston let go at the same time. Weird as phuck. But anyway, I might have to enlist yours and jake's help again this spring with a little tune-- I'm gonna be swapping an f22 into my new eg hatch.

Take out more timing...I don't even think my b16 sees that much timing at full boost.

You're lucky you didn't see this instead...
Attachment 27752

Stock LS block @ 14psi...too much timing and detonation ftl. When I pulled the piston out for that cylinder there were no ringlands left.
