The D-I-Y Home Improvement thread.

So I've been working on some stuff at my house, and I thought I would post it up. I get alot of idea's from variations of other stuff I've seen, so if any HMT'ers have some stuff they've done, post up.

On the side of my townhouse there is this box on the side of every house. Its used for the fireplace (if you got a house with one). The fireplaces they were offering were those "for show" ones, but not anything that would actually heat the house, so I told them I didn't want it. When you don't get one, they just drywall over the "empty space" that would have been your fireplace.

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6494/house12lg.jpg

So I decided that I wanted to tear out the empty space behind the wall and make a TV cabinet. I tore a hole in the wall and then framed in the two shelves. Drywalled the new walls and ceiling. The trim work is still needed around the shelves, but I've been putting it off because I'm not a carpenter. I'll end up doing it, it's just gonna take me longer than if I did that kind of ---- every day. Oh, I also installed the electric, cable, and recessed lights.

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/3989/house33me.jpg

Another thing I thought I would do is add a TV shelf upstairs in the loft. The room isn't super huge, and sometimes things just seem too plain, so I found a spot that I wanted to do it above the stairs. I'm still finishing the drywall, but it's almost there. (Cable and Electircity installed too, just has a little drywall mud in the boxes.)

This is about the view where you'll see the TV from the soon to be couch.

If you've got something to post up in the D-I-Y home improvement thread, git r done.

Ownin a house ain't all it's cracked up to be...especially when it's kind of a project home. Me and my fiance just bought one a few months ago, and all the little stuff that we knew had to be done is ---- compared to the big dog stuff that i just found out that had to be done. I say let the house fall down...i got me a 2 car garage with a second floor and an oil pit ;D

I myself want a "fixer uper". I looked at a house along a river that needed some desperate TLC back when we were gonna get out of the military, but we never accualy contaced a realtor, long story short, it was a bank repo and the bank wanted the payoff of $30,000. now its back on the market for $90K with new carpet, and a paint job. probably ~$6000 worth of work. :-\

Re: The D-I-Y Home Improvement thread.

Stevemode, it isn't absolutely necessary, but I've noticed on a lot of the houses that I was working on (I do construction in the summers) had about 10 one inch holes drilled (just through the sheetrock) behind the tv to vent out the heat if they were using a cabinet like yours for big screen tv's. Like I said, it isn't necessary, but I've been noticing a lot of the electronics installers (no, not electricians, I'm talking about the guys that do surround sound, expensive tv installs, voice command ----) doing it these past few years.

Yes, it is an apartment. Got a really good deal. It is on the Riverside/ Orange County border and if it was on the Orange County side it would have cost an extra 3k a month, just to be able to say you live in the OC. ::) The best part is that my commute to work just went from 55 minutes, down to 4 minutes.

Is California the only state that puts a wall or fence around their backyard? I notice that most other states have free roaming back yards.

Haha, you live in Riverside. :P

My house hasn't changed in the 1.5 years I've lived in it. If I was smart when I was younger I would have bought a house. I decided I wanted to buy turbo parts and max out my credit cards instead. :1 Brand new houses I was looking at that were selling for ~$75,000 are now selling for $200,000+ no matter how shitty they are. Now I'm fucked and can't afford the cheapest shitbox house out here. :3 Time to move.....

House looks good Steve. Now you just need to find a good painter to finish it off. Too bad there isn't any in that area. :P

BTW, I hope you put insulators around those recess cans. Those fuckers get hot and have been known to set fires if installed without insulators. If there isn't any insulation above that area then it doesn't matter though...

Re: The D-I-Y Home Improvement thread.

The cans I got have completely enclosed boxes. The specs said insulation could touch them. I was kinda freakin about how close I was gonna put the insulation to them, but I read the paperwork and the boxes and they both said they could be in direct contact with the insulation.
Then I took some of the insulation I was using and tried to light it on fire with a lighter, and it crinkled up, but wouldn't catch on fire.

After reading all the documentation saying "can be direct contact" and then the fire test, I'm sure I won't have a problem with the insulation in the ceiling. It did take me all of that to convince myself though. lol

haha, that's how all of the houses in suburbia come. White, white and more white.

I think Steve is still deciding on some colors, but the one who wears the daddy pants has to approve O0

Re: The D-I-Y Home Improvement thread.

you'd only have to worry about the lights if you bought the ones that say "non-ic" that means insulation contact..not inter cooled
