Cuttin' springs

okay guys I'm having the hardest time foundin' the right lower springs for my 91 4dr tegra, so a friend of mine runs this lil' dealership, the in house mechanic said that he'll cut my springs for 50 bucks, 3 in the back, and 2 in the front. Is it really worth it????

Re: Cuttin' springs

eric u are a trick ass cracker :P, dont ever cut your springs, id rather go and find some 20 doller egay coilovers or somthin, just look around, cuting the springs is the worst thing u will ever do. get coilovers or springs, u might be able to use 2dr springs, although they might be a little soft. but go get some real ---- like h&r or tein, skunk 2, tokico, etc..., cuting the springs will have your car hopen around and ---- over bumps, they will get soft as hell and can ---- your car up because you dont know if there each cut the same lenght down.

You can get some ebay springs for that much shipped to your door, I can understand going ghetto on some stuff but never your suspesion. Especially something that will completely destroy your handling and your car.
as mentioned befor you are a ricer.

Re: Cuttin' springs

just get some neuspeeds for a 2dr. they are insanely stiff to begin with so they would be fine on the 4dr

Re: Cuttin' springs

ive used cut springs with upgraded shocks and the ride is much better than shitty ebay coilovers

u cut both front and back springs the same length and the front will become lower

Re: Cuttin' springs

have any of you actually ever had a car with evenly measured and cut springs and decent struts before? Im not saying its the best setup but ive done this more than once with good results. The thing about not getting cv joints out is bullshit and so is the bent unibody thing. If that happened you most likely took the bumpstops all the way out and cut the spring in half and then hit a speed bump doing 80. Ebay coilovers are complete dogshit and i would rather have cut springs any day since ebay coilovers ride like ass, much worse than cut springs (at least the ones ive seen). I run cut springs, kyb struts, and ST swaybars front and rear and my car handles pretty ------- good, especially considering how low it is and how narrow the tires are. Granted, a set of high-dollar name brand springs would be great but i dont have the extra cash for them right now. If you measure and cut the springs and leave at least some of your bumpstop in, and get a decent strut, the car will handle just fine imho.

I agree with this man. You can run cut springs just fine, you just need to make sure you cut them all evenly and you know what the spring rate is of the spring you're cutting. There's basic math involved but you can tell what your spring rate is going to be depending on the amount of coils you cut out.

It's not running cut springs that fucks things up, it's the fact that cut springs are stiffer than non-cut, and you blow stock dampers, just like you would if you were to run super stiff springs on stock dampers ;) Some food for thought...

Re: Cuttin' springs

I also have to agree, unless you are cutting the springs in half (Which most people do and that' when you see ---- ass bumpy rides) then no it will such.

but if you take 1-2 inches off so like 1.5-2 coils you'll still be ok.

This is of course if you have no $$ to buy real suspension which would be the first choice.

Re: Cuttin' springs

actually, i have ran cut springs before, and the splines in the cv axle's locked into my transmission. they sit ackwardly in the transmission, and its not an even angle. the ride was not too bad, but i'd never do it again

Re: Cuttin' springs

use civic or crx or any 88-96 sprins and adjusters integra, civic, and crx would be your best bet ::)

either you cut the springs waay too much to cause such a bind in the axle, or something else happened to cause them to get stuck

either way, cut or aftermarket spings, both lower your car. the springs wouldnt cause your axles to bind unless you dropped your car like 5" and went rally racing

Re: Cuttin' springs

From experince i tell you this story.

i bought a 88 civic hatch.
it had cut springs and it drove like STINKING PILE OF ----!!! BANG BANG SCRAP!@!!!!
those tow eyes underneith the car will the more like C or U shape becuase of that.
Next the front portion of the body was slightly bent upward from impact damage

I replaced the struts and springs with SPAX kit... too little to late i could not fix the damage that was done.

i took it to body shop to fix the broken spot welds thats $$$ and time.

Don't ever cut springs its stupid.

1. it changes the load rate of the springs to less .... then original. which is bad.. BOUNCY..uncontrolable car.
2. if you want to go lower you need more load rate to height change about 10% per inch( gross estimation i can't remember that facts)
3. it makes the car unstable you can wreck and kill your self or someone else.

there is a kid i know that drives a Daewoo.
cut springs very very low
understeered into a concrete wall no more daewoo.

Sure $50 bucks equates to $4000 of damage. ( loss of the car or life)

you do the math
your safty
your life
someone else life (and upset brother with a GUN!!)

becuase people who cut springs don't need to drive.. there hazard and i wouldn't hesatate to slash your tires.... get my point.

too many times i have see my friends and famly members get injured becuase some dick head Ricer ---- too fucken ghetto and wrecked thier ---- into someone becuase they couldn't control there car...

ITS NOT ABOUT LOOKS ITS ABOUT PERFORMANCE...
if you want looks get big rims and stay slow

you share the road with every one else.

ok im over it..... cut springs are gay.. period. >:(
