Re:CRX Project Pictures First Stage
once the cage is in and my friend kenny gets back from iraq, the cosmetics will be handled, i plan on only straightening it out and smoothing the bad spots in the pics, then it goes satin or flat black, depending on cost.
during that time i will work on the LS swap and turbo buildup. |

Re:CRX Project Pictures First Stage
I am assuming this is your first cage? you do know there are alot of rules and regulations when putting a cage in for racing right?
I.E how far the hoop is from your head/backseat etc, how the side bars are made, how large the base plates are etc. Are you making it from scratch? |

Re:CRX Project Pictures First Stage
I dont, you could just buy the book.

If this cage wont pass spec for 11's, and I ever get that far, I might someday step up. For now the website has a little bit of info to offer. When do I need a roll bar or roll cage, and what should it look like? A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.99. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs. The rollbar must be constructed of minimum 1 ¾ inch o.d. x .118 inch wall mild steel tubing, or 1 ¾ x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram: http://www.nhra.com/images/rollbar.gif If the floor and/or firewall has been modified, then a full roll cage is required beginning at a 10.99 e.t. A full roll cage is required in any vehicle running 9.99 seconds or quicker, and any vehicle running 135 mph or faster (regardless of e.t.). The roll cage must be constructed of minimum 1 5/8 o.d.x .118 mild steel tubing, or 1 5/8 x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram: http://www.nhra.com/images/rollcage.gif The roll cage of any vehicle running 9.99 or quicker, or 135 mph or faster, must also be certified by NHRA every 3 years, and have a serialized sticker affixed prior to participation. |
Re:CRX Project Pictures First Stage
Man I just realized that our main hoop plates WAY exceed the 1/8" requirement.
We used some plates pre-made from some off-road rollcage stuff and they're 1/4" thick. |

have fun making that fit...

Stage 1 continues - The Cage Begins
This is the makings of the main hoop sitting outside the car http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage1.jpg These next two are the side rails being mocked up, we didn't get much done tonite after a full day at work. These will be split to allow the main hoop to pass through, somewhere near the bend by the door http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage2.jpg http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage3.jpg This shows the slight bend and the foot of the sidebars, we opted to do this so it would be easier to center on a plate, yet we could get the upper portion of the bar as close to the door as possible. http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage4.jpg Shot of both sidebars just sitting mocked in place, you can see the main hoops oversized base plate, the main hoop leans back to meet the bend above it, then heads straight up to match the doorline http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage7.jpg Rear view of one side bar. http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage9.jpg Rear view both sides in place http://www.boostednw.com/projects/88crx/cage/cage10.jpg Next session at the shop we should get the bars coped out and start welding some stuff together. I'll post more as soon as I have some. |
Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
looks like someone has some nice tools to be making that hoop. I've always seen door bars go all the way to where your feet would be, but it looks good still. :)

The bender we're using is the same one he uses on all his rock sidebars, bumpers, etc. when he does his off-road stuff, and has more than paid for itself a few times now. Just a hand powered bender mounted to his welding table. |

Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
From the pics it looks like some large ID piping and I've never seen a hand bender capable of bending larger than 2" ID w/thin wall thickness. Pics/info please. :)
the cage looks like its gonna turn out great! |
Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
lets see some pics of the bender for sure 2morow, i can't wait, good job fook, even tho you are gay.
|
Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
steve, some people have what are called muscles, this allows us to use machines such as manual pipe benders.

is the car an HF? if so thats an EGR plug...you dont need it ;) |
Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
I don't have an '05 rulebook in front of me, but I was flipping through one the other day and seem to remember the cage/bar section being the same except that you can now go as fast as 11.50 without a bar.
Not sure if those doorbars will pass tech though. They have to cross the drivers arm between the shoulder and elbow. The rulebook doesn't say if that's with your hands on the steering wheel or hands in the lap. They leave that part up to the tech dirrector, and everyone knows those guys can be dicks if they want to. |

It all comes out for the LS swap tho |
Re:CRX Project Pictures Stage 1 - The Cage (updated)
Build a extoskeliton(sp) cage he'll know what that is ;) I would like to see pics of the bender too ;D Nice work fook.
